To celebrate Bernd Schneider claiming the fourth out of his record-breaking five DTM championship titles in 2003, Mercedes-Benz commissioned the HWA AG team that had masterminded his success to produce an imposing road car counterpart to the carbon fibre silhouette racer. The result was the flared-arched CLK DTM AMG.
Just 100 Coupés were completed alongside 80 Cabriolet editions. Both models gained a thunderous, 5.4-litre V-8 engine enhanced by a supercharger to deliver more than 580 horsepower to the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission.
The cabin reflects the model’s competition heritage, with exposed carbon fibre trim, deeply bolstered seats, and a squared-off steering wheel inspired by the track variant. Toggle switches—placed in what would be the ashtray on a standard CLK—operate the traction control, stability control, and transmission settings, allowing the driver to unleash the DTM’s full potential with the flick of a switch.
The front wings, bumpers, and rear arch flares are all made from carbon fibre and other custom touches by HWA can be found throughout the car. One fascinating difference between the Coupé and Cabriolet is that the latter has a composite bonnet, while the hardtop has the standard metal panel from the CLK.
This convertible CLK DTM was originally specified for the German market. It is finished in the rare “triple black” livery, featuring Obsidian Black paint over Anthracite leather upholstery and a matching black cabriolet top.
The consigning owner purchased this car in December 2010. Under their care, it has since been greatly enjoyed and fastidiously maintained with regular servicing by marque dealers or AMG specialists. Accordingly, the odometer read 71,670 kilometres at the time of cataloguing.
Incredibly rare, and featuring enough bite to match its bark, this CLK DTM Cabriolet is a truly exciting memento of Mercedes-AMG’s remarkable motorsport record.
