Description

With a new prize north of 80’000 Swiss Francs, the Mercedes 600 Pullman was, in 1966, on par with a Rolls Royce or Bentley but was priced at around 20’000 Francs above a comparable Cadillac or Lincoln. No wonder therefore that, between 1963 and 1981 (new price then DM 185’500), only 124 of those super luxury limousines with six doors, a massive 6.3 litre V8 engine, 250 hp and all the luxuries imaginable found a taker. This example was delivered to the personal transport division of Welti-Furrer AG in Zurich on the 31st of March 1966 and used as rental limousine with chauffeur for special occasions. Many rich and beautiful were transported in the 600 and with transport duties for the Rolling Stones on their first concert in Switzerland in 1967, it also received its musical accolade. It certainly would be fascinating to know all the stories the car could tell. Apparently, the limousine was very popular, as in 1969, already 69’442 kilometres were recorded in the service records from Stuttgart Untertürkheim. Later the car was maintained in the company‘s own garage and receipts from 1976 indicate that the Pullman was a very popular means of transport for the rich and famous of the time, with a mileage of 167’960 kilometres indicated. In December 1981, after more than 15 years of service and around 220,000 kilometres driven, the noble Merc, despite diligent maintenance performed, required a serious makeover. After several offers and verifications whether a similar car in a better condition would be the best way to go in October 1985 it was decided to perform a complete restoration of the 600. The mechanical side of the project was entrusted to the Mercedes garage Issler in Grenzach (Germany) while the coachwork and interior were restored by Carrosserie Langenthal AG. There, the magnificent 600 was repainted from the original black to the current dark blue (DB 904) and the interior recovered in blue leather to the front and blue velour to the back. In August 1986, this major project was completed and after a new MOT the car was put back into service. In 1987 at 228’650km, a new gearbox was installed and in 1994, within around 250’000 kilometres, the Mercedes was finally retired and sold. It spent the next 27 years in two private collections but was not registered and driven very sparingly. In 2021, the Pullman was taken over by the vendor and after a thorough check and major servicing, was registered once again. With only two registered owners, 262’000 kilometres driven and a well-documented history, this magnificent Mercedes is in good to very good condition. The engine is running well, the gearbox is shifting as it should and the air suspension works but should hold pressure longer. This exceedingly rare 6 door limousine will be handed over to a new owner with the latest veteran MOT from October 2021.
