"Prior to its merger with Daimler AG, AMG was an independent tuner that was established in 1967 by Daimler-Benz engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher (the G is for Grossaspach, Aufrecht’s birthplace). AMG would modify engines and sell performance accessories that customers could use to upgrade their Mercedes-Benz automobiles. By the 1980s, customers were special-ordering Mercedes-Benz's through AMG with expensive modifications, yet the two companies’ first joint product, the AMG C36, would not be introduced until 1993. Arguably the most legendary of these ‘pre-merger’ cars is the 560 SEC AMG which were produced after AMG received orders from several prominent Japanese private museums and collectors. Powered by a 6.0 litre V8, the engine itself was designed and built at Affalterbach using AMG custom Quad Cam head with four valves per cylinder, producing twice the torque at half the engine speed of the original 5.6 litre engine. On the outside, the car was fitted with distinctive AMG-designed front and rear wings and door panels that allowed much wider wheels and tires to be fitted, hence they came to be known as widebody. Such performance and utter exclusivity came at a steep cost, individual sale prices varied but, in the end, they cost in excess of $200,000 and even at that level there was great demand but only a very few produced.
This like the few others built, was based on a brand new, fully warranted Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC. The transformation and re-engineering took a long time and it was nearly two years before they first appeared at the Japanese Motor Shows. This led, at the time and still to this day, a false belief that these cars were assembled in Japan by a new division of AGM, the truth is at that time few other buyers had so much extra cash to give AMG a free hand in building these cars.
This right hand drive, 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC AMG Widebody was imported to the UK in 1994, it is believed to come from Japan and has been in a private collection for the last ten years. Fitted with the uprated AMG six litre engine with Quad Cams and four valves per cylinder making this the most powerful engine fitted to a road car of the period. This car has recently been repainted in the original colour of white and retains the original dark blue leather interior with matching headlining, other features include a TV fitted in the dashboard, fully electric front seats, a VHS tape player in the boot, a high specification stereo system and the full AMG widebody bodykit. This 560 SEC AMG is supplied with a UK V5 registration document and an MoT test certificate which expires in March 2022. It is believed that less than 50 of these models were ever built and it is unknown how many were created in right hand drive, this has to be one of the rarest Mercedes-Benz to come to market and a unique opportunity to buy what can be only described as a Mercedes-Benz hyper car of its time."
