Eager to build on the sales success of the earlier “Gullwing” version of the 300 SL, the open-top Roadster variant replaced the hard-top and was first displayed by Mercedes-Benz at the Geneva Motor Show in 1957. Overall design of the 300 SL Roadster changed slightly in order to facilitate the conventional doors and convertible top—leading to alterations to the space frame alongside the lowering of the sills to increase floor space. This resulted in easier access for the driver and passenger; early adopters of the Gullwing coupe cited this as one of the main areas for improvement, though this was criticism in isolation for a car that was otherwise highly praised.

This 300 SL Roadster was delivered to Handelsgesellschaft Company in Zurich, Switzerland on 17 February 1958. Finished in White over a Black leather interior with a Black soft top, it was specified with the steering wheel and gear lever button in black. Regrettably, little is known about the history of chassis number “8500137” until it was restored in 1995, according to a report by marque expert, Eric Le Moine. The roadster’s body was refinished in the period factory colour of Silver and a hardtop was supplied with the finished car. This roadster is matching-numbers body, chassis, differential, engine, front kingpins, and steering box. Prior to its last change of ownership in 1998, this Mercedes-Benz is said to have been used regularly and was even driven to the auction where it was purchased by the current owner.

The 300 SL roadster’s masterful blend of exquisite style and remarkable engineering make it an excellent, robust, and highly sought companion for long-distance touring. This example, having benefitted from a restoration years ago, reflects a high level of care and cherished ownership that has spanned over 20 years.

Avec l'objectif de connaître le même succès commercial que la 300 SL à portes "papillon", la version Roadster décapotable a remplacé le coupé et a été présentée pour la première fois par Mercedes au Salon de Genève 1957. L'architecture de la 300 SL Roadster a été légèrement revue pour permettre la présence de portes conventionnelles et d'une capote, avec une légère modification de la structure tubulaire accompagnée d'un abaissement des seuils de porte et d'un agrandissement du plancher.
