“Das beste oder Nichts” is still the Mercedes-Benz slogan and in this case there was never a truer saying. In the 50’s the Mercedes-Benz W188 300S Coupé was by far the most opulent vehicle on the market. The W188 300S was the Coupé, Convertible or Roadster variant of the world famous “Adenauer”. The W188 made its debut at the 1951 Autosalon de Paris. Whilst the car was called a “300S” it would take until 1972 before Mercedes-Benz would start to offer S-Class cars. Mercedes-Benz built a total of 560 across the range of which 216 were of the Coupé variant we have here. Weighing in at 1,740 Kg the car managed a top speed of 175 km/hr thanks to its 150 Ps strong engine. The W188 was completely handbuilt and the first to have power assisted brakes. The W188 was truly a car for the rich and famous of that era. Amongst the famous were people such as Haribo founder Hans Riegel, the Aga Khan and actor Gary Cooper, so you would have been in rather good company if you owned one too.

This Swiss W188 model is in excellent condition.

The fully original bodywork looks fantastic. It has nice and thin, correctly aligned panelwork. Every bit of decal and the hubcaps are in pristine order. The car was resprayed for purely cosmetic reasons in the original green finish. The car’s wonderful paintwork still stands as attribute to the very thorough and expert work done at the time.

The interior is, we are happy to say, completely original. The matching luggage set is present. The original brown leather is of exceptional quality. The carpets and door cards are also in great condition. All the controls and gauges work exactly as they should. The wooden inlay on the dashboard and doors is also in very good and original condition. Inside time has done nothing to diminish its splendour.

The perfect mechanical maintenance left nothing to chance. The M188 engine would later evolve into the M198 found in the world famous Mercedes-Benz Gullwing. This one is a 3 litre straight-six with three Solex carburettors. The engine produces 150 PS at 5,500 RPM and is attached to a manual 4-speed transmission. It has all-round good working drum brakes. The 300S also has the benefit of independent suspension on all fours. Perishable items such as suspension, door and window rubbers are also in good condition.

The car comes with copies of the original factory documents confirming the car has matching paintwork as well as matching numbers engine.
