A 1956 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet in dark blue with beige leather upholstery. That already sounds right before you have even seen the car. But once you do see it, things only get better. The Ponton lines, the chrome, the long doors, and that beautiful open body all come together to create exactly the kind of classic convertible Mercedes-Benz did so well in the 1950s. Distinguished, but never stiff. Luxurious, but never flashy. And above all, exceptionally pleasant to look at.

The 220 S was introduced in 1956 as part of a new generation of Mercedes-Benz models featuring the self-supporting Ponton body. Under the hood was a 2.2-liter inline-six with an overhead camshaft, producing around 100 horsepower. That made the 220 S not only comfortable and solid, but also quick enough for serious long-distance travel by the standards of the day. Especially in Cabriolet form, this was no ordinary Mercedes, but a particularly luxurious open four-seater for customers who clearly wanted something more special than the standard sedan.

And who could blame them? The Cabriolet received a shorter wheelbase than the sedan and was carefully built in Sindelfingen. That is exactly why the proportions work so well. The car looks compact enough to remain elegant, yet spacious and substantial enough to be instantly recognizable as a true Mercedes-Benz. Could this be the most beautiful model of the Ponton era? We completely understand the question.

This example was fully restored and rebuilt in Germany in 2019. And in our experience, a German restoration usually means one thing above all: quality. Not a quick cosmetic refresh, but a thorough approach in which the details matter. The paintwork is particularly beautiful, the beige leather is in superb condition, and the correct finishing gives the car exactly the right atmosphere. Be sure to take a look at the extensive photo report on our website as well.

The entire car feels fresh, carefully presented, and impressively well put together. Mechanically, this 220 S is equally convincing. The engine runs quietly and smoothly, exactly as you would hope from a Mercedes-Benz of this caliber. Dark blue with beige. Or, perhaps even better said: Dunkelblau mit Teigbeige. It is one of those color combinations that simply does not age. Classic, stylish, and with exactly the right amount of elegance. In addition, the previous owner had a bespoke luggage set made for each of his cars.

A fully restored 1956 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet, finished in an iconic color combination, beautifully detailed, and driving exactly as a great classic Mercedes-Benz should. Open-top motoring, six cylinders ahead of you, chrome all around, and custom-made luggage in the back.
