1954 Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet A (W187)

The Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet A is among the most elegant open-top models in the post-war history of Mercedes-Benz. When the W187 series was introduced in 1951, it marked an important step forward for the manufacturer. Alongside the larger Mercedes-Benz 300, the 220 was among the first new six-cylinder models presented by Mercedes-Benz after the Second World War. The model combined refined engineering with the classic styling and high-quality craftsmanship for which the marque had established its reputation. The Cabriolet A occupied a particularly special position within the range. With a total production of just 1,278 examples, this version is now among the rarer open-top Mercedes-Benz models of the 1950s.

This particular example from 1954 is finished in an attractive two-tone combination of cream and dark brown, complemented by a dark brown fabric convertible top. The light-coloured wings create an elegant contrast with the dark brown central section of the bodywork. The long bonnet, flowing wing lines, extensive chrome detailing and distinctive Mercedes-Benz radiator grille give the car a stately appearance. The classic wheels with matching hubcaps further complement the elegant design. Together, these elements create a particularly distinguished example of 1950s automotive styling.

The interior is upholstered in dark brown leather and forms an important part of this Mercedes-Benz's character. The seats display visible signs of use and a natural patina developed over the years. The leather has retained its classic appearance, with creases and wear consistent with the car's age. The door panels, wooden trim and dashboard with its characteristic round instruments further contribute to the authentic atmosphere. It is precisely this combination of well-presented woodwork, classic leather and visible signs of age that gives the interior a character difficult to replicate in a fully refurbished example.

An especially interesting aspect of this Mercedes-Benz is its Swiss provenance. According to the available information, the car was originally delivered new in Switzerland in 1954 and has had, as far as is known, three previous owners. The Swiss country identification plate displayed at the rear also reflects this history. The car is now registered in the Netherlands. The odometer currently shows approximately 76,585 kilometres, although the total distance travelled has not been independently verified.

Under the bonnet lies the 2.2-litre M180 inline six-cylinder engine, with a displacement of 2,197 cc. Featuring an overhead camshaft, this engine produced approximately 85 hp in the Cabriolet A according to the original factory specifications. The engine is paired with a four-speed manual transmission, sending power to the rear wheels. The six-cylinder engine is known for its smooth character and provides a fitting combination with the comfortable and elegant nature of this open-top Mercedes-Benz.

From a technical perspective, the W187 represents an interesting period in the development of Mercedes-Benz. The model combined traditional construction methods with more modern engine technology and a higher level of comfort than its predecessors. The Cabriolet A was specifically aimed at customers who valued exclusivity, elegance and the pleasure of open-top motoring. Thanks to its distinctive bodywork and limited production, this version already occupied an exclusive position within the Mercedes-Benz range when new.

The Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet A has become a highly regarded classic among enthusiasts of post-war Mercedes-Benz models. This particular example stands out for its attractive two-tone bodywork, elegant dark brown convertible top and characterful leather interior with visible patina. Combined with its Swiss provenance and the model's limited production, it represents an interesting open-top Mercedes-Benz from an era when classic design, craftsmanship and refined engineering came together.
