A Running Example for Continued Preservation or Straightforward Restoration
220 Cabriolet A: As World War II ended, Daimler-Benz AG was in precarious health. In 1951, an upscale modernization of the 170 bowed as the 220 series, with the internal company designation of W187. Styling was similar to the 170, but its headlamps were faired into the front fenders instead of free-standing, giving the car a more up-to-date appearance. The engine, however, was completely new. It was novel not only in its architecture but also for its dimensions. The "short-stroke" was unusual in Europe at the time, but became the mainstay of Mercedes-Benz's line, and derivatives remained in production until the 1970s. More than 16,000 Mercedes-Benz 220s were sedans, but more discerning buyers also had the option of ordering a two-three seat Cabriolet A or a full four-seat Cabriolet B. Only 1,278 clients opted for the "A" version.
187.012.01795/51: A European specified and delivered car, it is believed this particular 220 made its way to Connecticut relatively early in life, where it would maintain residence until 2020. A 1960/61Connecticut inspection decal remains affixed to the Cabriolet's original windscreen. The car is now being offered, as discovered from many years of protective garage storage.
The 220 Cabriolet A displays older, but well-appointed and very honest cosmetics, 01795 certainly leaves a lasting impression. The car appears to retain much of its original trim, sheet metal, glass, plaques, emblems, and auxiliary equipment - all benefiting from years of dry storage. The body presents straight panels with excellent gaps, fitment and older lacquer paint in correct maroon color. Period Hella fog lamps and correct unsealed headlights are mounted upfront.
The cabin retains original seating, dashboard, door panels and woodwork, while carpeting throughout the interior and luggage compartment have been replaced in years past. The car exudes proper preservation and originality from all angles. A rare Telefunken tube radio complements. The current mileage reads 38,454 kms – however, a radiator emblem boasts 100k kms traversed, so likely 138,454+ kms.
The engine bay is largely complete and unrestored, leading to an unusually sound chassis and undercarriage. A few small areas of noted corrosion are photographed. Upon its arrival at our facility (out of longterm storage), the engine started right up without assistance, however, a full mechanical assessment and service should be commissioned prior to any road use. Engine compression reads: 120, 102, 105, 110, 115, 110 psi.
The luggage compartment contains a matching spare wheel – dated January 1958, tool kit, jack, and emergency equipment, luggage straps, and box of numerous unused consumable parts.
