In the late 1960s, Matra sought to offer an original sports car that could also be used for daily driving. The Matra 530 was introduced in 1967 with a different approach from the classic sports cars of the era.
Its name refers to the R.530 missile developed by the group’s aerospace division, evoking Matra’s technological heritage. The car is equipped with a 1.7-liter Ford V4 engine, derived from the Taunus, mounted in a mid-rear position. This choice improved the car’s overall balance while maintaining simple and reliable mechanics.
Designed by Philippe Guédon, the Matra 530 also stands out for its polyester resin body and removable targa roof. It thus combines the spirit of a sports coupe with a certain versatility of use.
The 9945 chassis presented here comes to us from Poitou, where it has spent its entire life. It was delivered new on August 16, 1972, to Mr. André Vives, a resident of Poitiers. He kept it for three years before selling it in 1975 to its second owner. Our seller purchased this Matra on February 1, 1977, upon his return from Africa. It was his first car, which he has cherished for the past 49 years.
The car has remained in its original condition. Never restored, the ravages of time have made it a fine foundation for a restoration project. Indeed, while mechanical work was recently performed (no invoices available) to keep it running, the chassis, body, and upholstery need to be addressed by its future owner, offering the opportunity to breathe new life into one of the most unique and endearing models in French automotive history.
