Entrata nella piena proprietà della Fiat nel 1993, Maserati ha potuto beneficiare dello straordinario motore Ferrari V8 (4.244 cm3) per il lancio della sua nuova 4200GT “Coupé”. La Trofeo, lanciata nel 2003 e derivata dalla 4200 GT, è una vettura destinata esclusivamente alle competizioni ed in particolare al “Trofeo Maserati”, il campionato di sport motoristici “monomarca” dove solo questo modello poteva gareggiare. Più leggero di quasi 250 kg rispetto a una 4200 GT Series, il Trofeo guadagna potenza con 413 CV ottenuti grazie ad una nuovissima gestione del motore e ad un nuovo impianto di scarico.
