Description

Groovy 70’s Supercar

This early production Maserati Indy is a wonderful example of a previously overlooked model, offering luxury, comfort and an outstanding performance in a four-seater body. It’s a well-presented, good solid driver quality car, coming from a significant east coast collection.

This Car’s Past

The current owner purchased this car two years ago in France, imported it, titled it and has meticulously cared for it since. Well-respected Italian car master technician Ned Gallaher has recently serviced the engine.

History of The Model

The Indy was conceived as an alternative to the Ghibli offering a V8 engine and room for four people; it effectively replaced both the ageing six-cylinder 2+2 Maserati Sebring—which descended from the 1957 3500 GT— and the first generation Quattroporte. Styled by Vignale and presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1969, the Maserati Indy had the advantage of a body that could accommodate four people, and featured an inclined rear window that served as tailgate. The centerpiece of the car was its four-cam V8 engine, designed by Giulio Alfieri. Strong and versatile, the 4.2-litre version developed 250 bhp. It is complete with the original and highly desirable equipment such as air conditioning and power steering.

Restoration or Preservation History

Some twelve years ago this Indy was restored at great expense. The car was completely repainted, engine and transmission overhauled and the interior was renovated by the Antoine upholstery workshop. On the mechanical side, the car retains the original matching numbers engine and has had continuous professional upkeep. On the cosmetic side, the paint, glass and metalwork present very well, with a superb interior.

Summary

This is a great opportunity to purchase a superbly restored, overlooked model. The Indy’s more docile V8 makes it a more “manageable” car than its 12 cylinder Italian brethren of the same era, while still packing a powerful punch. This is your chance to get the same exhilaration of driving a Maserati Ghibli at a fraction of the price.
