Description
Estimated Price: £30,000 - £40,000
Introduced in 1969, the Maserati Indy was conceived as a luxurious four-seat Grand Tourer, combining genuine accommodation for four with the effortless performance expected of a Maserati. Its elegant fastback bodywork was designed by Vignale, and the arrival of the 4.7-litre version brought Maserati's 4,719cc V8, producing around 290bhp.
For many, the 4700 is a particularly appealing specification and this example combines the larger V8 with a five-speed manual gearbox and left-hand drive. Maserati records indicate that just 367 examples of the Indy 4700 were produced.
Dating from 1971, this remarkable example is accompanied by a Maserati S.p.A. Certificate of Origin confirming its matching-numbers status. First registered in Italy in June 1972, an Automobile Club d'Italia Duplicato remains on file. Its registration was cancelled in October 1975 before the car was subsequently registered in Roma in October 1979.
We understand that the Indy covered some 19,789km during its early life before being placed into the garage of a château in Belgium, where it remained for decades.
In 2010, the Maserati was imported to the UK by marque specialists, McGrath Maserati, for a UK customer. At that point it was found to retain what is understood to be its original paintwork and interior, together with its original components and matching-numbers drivetrain.
The intention was to recommission the car and enjoy it in this wonderfully preserved state. However, other Maserati projects took precedence and the Indy remained untouched in dry storage for a further 16 years, finally emerging in September 2026.
Consequently, this is a fascinating survivor. It retains its original Italian Roma number plates, period interior and even a wonderfully evocative bottle of vivid green 'Playboy' aftershave discovered in the glovebox. It currently sits on Michelin XVS tyres.
Whilst in storage, oil has been injected into the cylinder bores and the engine turned over by hand. It remains free-turning, however, the car has not been started and will require appropriate inspection and recommissioning before returning to the road. The indicated mileage is just 19,789km and our vendor believes this may be amongst the lowest-mileage surviving Indys.
With its matching-numbers 4.7-litre V8, manual gearbox and remarkable degree of preservation, this is an exceptionally exciting proposition. Rather than simply another restoration project, its originality may make careful preservation and sympathetic recommissioning the more compelling approach, and potentially an interesting candidate for preservation-class concours competition.
Offered at a very sensible estimate, we welcome and encourage inspection of this remarkable Maserati.
