Description

Probably, even the wind takes pleasure in caressing the soft shapes of the GranCabrio in the Sport version: its fascinating physiognomy is characterized by a long nose with decidedly sharp headlights and a voracious and prominent air intake, and by a “high seat” , framed by large triangular shaped headlights and showy exhaust terminals with an almost elliptical section. While the flowing sides are crossed by long sill “skirts”, and decorated with three precious air vent slits, which recall the gill openings of sharks. With remarkable charm even when closed, the GranCabrio Sport is absolutely irresistible when the hood in multilayer canvas, it fits into the trunk (in about 28 seconds), with a silent and fast electric and hydraulic mechanism. Too bad that, in this way, the trunk is reduced to a utilitarian capacity, which contrasts with the fact that this open sports car is one of the few able to carry four people for a walk, offering more than acceptable space even in the rear seats

Together with the MC Stradale, the extreme sports car with which it shares the engine (the latest evolution of the 4.7-liter V8), the GranCabrio Sport is the most powerful model in the Trident range: 450 HP at 7000 rpm, that is 11 more than the GranCabrio 4.7 “base”, compared to which it is slightly faster (285 km / h against 283) and brilliant. Much more substantial are the torque and the driving speed guaranteed by 510 Nm at 4750 rpm (ie 20 more than the “base”), while it should be noted that 80% of the maximum torque is already available at just 2500 rpm.

However, the transmission has one substantial difference: instead of the electrically operated six-speed transaxle arrangement of the MC Stradale, the GranCabrio Sport has a refined six-speed ZF automatic transmission, managed by the MC Auto Shift software (derived from that of the Quattroporte Sport GT S) which also provides the manual-sequential function, and which has five different operating modes: Auto-Normal, Manual-Normal, Auto-Sport, Manual-Sport and Ice. Shift times are very fast, almost like Formula 1 (in the order of 200 ms), and there are special functions: from the automatic double downshift, to the Launch-control MC Start Strategy (which allows more effective starts from a standstill), in addition to the prerogative that in Manual-Sport mode the system does not automatically kick-down (ie downshifting), but allows you to squeeze the gears up to the limiter.

The GranCabrio Sport shares the steel frame with the GranTurismo, but is equipped with structural aluminum reinforcements under the floor and cross bars arranged at the front, with hubs and struts in forged aluminum. All this, together with the strengthening of the doors and the relative arches (to ensure adequate resistance to torsion), resulted in a weight increase (compared to the GranTurismo S) of just 100 kg. The Sport is also equipped with the sophisticated Skyhook active suspension system (in an even more advanced version) which adjusts the shock absorbers (with a sportier calibration and 15% stiffer springs) in real time according to the conditions of the road surface and style. driving. The braking system is also adequate, which is based on self-ventilating discs with perforated surfaces and equipped with tangential grooves to the hub, which in addition to lightening them serve to keep the surfaces of the pads clean.

An open-air race on a mixed mountain route is an exciting experience, especially if the car is equipped with a windbreak (costs 960 euros, is fixed to the rear seats and transforms the Modenese convertible into a two-seater), which with contribution of the windscreen decidedly extended above the head, insulates well from the air, while ensuring a pleasant contact with the environment. But, above all, you can fully enjoy the exciting “sound” of the V8. A “soundtrack” that becomes overbearing when you press the “sport” button on the dashboard, which in addition to less silencing the exhaust, reduces shift times and steering response, and makes the suspension sportier.

More than for the power, the engine impresses with its splendid delivery: very sweet at low revs, it becomes exciting when, after having peeled the gas on 4000 rpm in corners, you sink your foot into the accelerator and enjoy its progression. overwhelming (despite the far from short ratios), up to 7500 rpm of the limiter intervention. Like the GranTurismo, the GranCabrio Sport is not a monster of agility, but it drives with great pleasure, and although the steering is not one of the most direct, it is still progressive and precise, allowing you to brush curves and counter-curves with great ease.
