At the 1992 Turin Motor Show, Maserati reintroduced the Ghibli to their model lineup after a nearly 20-year hiatus. Designed by Marcello Gandini, the Ghibli featured a 2+2 front engine layout with power sent to the rear wheels. Its basic shape and twin-turbocharged V-6 powerplant were derived from the Biturbo. An updated Ghibli was introduced at the 1994 Geneva Motor Show. That following year saw the addition of two sport variants, the Ghibli Kit Sportivo and the Ghibli Cup, the latter of which debuted at the 1995 Bologna Motor Show.
The Ghibli Cup was a road-going version of the Open Cup race car which competed in a single-marque racing series in 1995 and 1996. The Ghibli Cup was powered by a 2.0-liter engine rated at 330 hp, which at its release was the highest power output per liter for street legal car, impressively eclipsing supercars of the period, including the EB110 and XJ220. Differentiating itself from a regular Ghibli, the Cup featured Speedline wheels, improved suspension, and Brembo brakes. In addition, the interior was equipped with a Momo steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and carbon fiber trim. Only 75 examples of the Ghibli Cup were produced.
This 1996 Maserati Ghibli Cup is finished in Nero Siderale with a black interior. It was shipped to an official dealer in Italy and sold to its first owner on 4 October 1996. The consignor imported the car to the United States a few years ago and had it federalized by JK Technologies to be US compliant.
