The 1987 Lotus Esprit benefited from a far-reaching restyle by Peter Stevens (the McLaren F1 designer) with Kevlar reinforcing to the bodywork which improved torsional rigidity by 22% and a more spacious interior, this was known as the X180. Out went many of the sharp lines of Giugiaro, to be replaced by a more organic aero-look. It worked, too - the X180 Esprit certainly looked like a contemporary product when launched and remains a timeless design to this day.

This X180 has a 2.2 litre normally aspirated engine (the Lotus 912 engine) pushing out 172HP from a car that weighed little more than 1200kg. The car reached 60mph in 6.5 seconds and had a top speed of 138mph. Both normally aspirated and Turbo versions carried on (although they went all-turbo within three years). There was a little more power and a little more weight, but overall the Esprit experience was uncorrupted by the update.

This Lotus Esprit for sale is a lovely example delivered in Calypso Red with cream interior and has covered just shy of 40,000 miles. It has had 4 owners during its life and the current owner has owned it since 2015. There is an incredibly comprehensive history file included within the sale presenting original invoices and MOT test certificates from the car’s history. Its latest MOT was passed during August 2018 with no advisories recorded.

The Lotus Esprit is in lovely original condition, including its original toolkit. It is predicted to be a fantastic future classic and is available for immediate inspection with Cotswold Collectors Cars
