This Land Rover Defender from Tophat is not just any Defender. It's a car Crocodile Dundee would be very jealous of.
Take the new Tophat Waterdream Edition. Khaki green, super cool and completely custom. It may look like an old-fashioned Defender, but "old-fashioned" would be an insult to this shredder. Trust us: you're going to be called flat for a ride through the woods with friends if you have these in your driveway.
Tophat owners Carel van Helsdingen and Alex Zeeman, whom we affectionately call the Singer of Land Rover customizers, travel Europe in search of rusty old Defenders and turn them into custom cars that are secretly too beautiful to drive.
Topha completely strips the old Defender and then rebuilds it. Anything that is broken will be repaired or replaced. And the new Tophat Defender 90 Waterdream Edition is one of the most powerful Defenders ever. It has a completely new body kit and, as with all Tophat Defenders, a Corvette engine. This time the engine of the last Corvette Z06 with no less than 700 hp and 1000 nm of torque.
''If you order such an engine with powertrain from General Motors, it will simply be sent to you. In a wooden box. That's fantastic, when you unpack such a box,'' said Van Helsingen in this big interview we had with Tophat a year ago.
Also a big difference between the original Defender and the Tophat Defender is the appearance, except for the engine. The Tophat guys decided to give the car a vintage look and the khaki green paint seems like a nod to the Defender's past as a farm truck. But given the classic rims, the wide body and the new grille, you don't want to drive there with this Defender.
In terms of specs, the Defender 90 Waterdream edition also includes a new suspension, drivetrain, a custom-made dashboard and a three-seater front seat. All lamps are LED. This Defender also includes custom shock absorbers from Koni and new brakes in collaboration with AP racing brake systems.
There are also quite a few details that reflect the collaboration with Tophat. The paint, the backlighted logo and the specially designed audio system of more than 3000 watts can also be found in the Defender.
