The Land Rover One Ten and Ninety – renamed as the Defender in 1990 – has rightfully cemented itself as one of the most important models to roll out of Land Rover's Solihull production line in the 20th century. Introduced in 1983 and remaining in production until 2012 with only subtle changes, the Defender was able to trace its robust design back to the original Series I Land Rover, demonstrating longevity both in terms of mechanicals and styling. The Defender's permanent four-wheel drive system, paired with a versatile range of engines and body styles from the factory, made it a landmark all-purpose vehicle in Britain and around the world.
Today, thanks to the Defender's incredible endurance, many restoration companies and skilled craftsmen have directed their talents at bringing the Defender into the 21st century with elaborate "restomod" builds. While its all-terrain prowess is undisputed, the stock Defender's less-than-stellar ride quality on conventional roads and lack of modern conveniences has been rectified in this case by noted Land Rover restorers ECD Automotive Design in Kissimmee, Florida.
Dubbed Project Rainer, this 1987 Land Rover 110 was completely re-engineered from the ground up, starting with its powertrain, which now consists of a Chevrolet LS3 V8 engine coupled to a 6L80-E six-speed automatic transmission. The Defender's already aggressive road presence has been enhanced by an ECD wide-body kit finished in Quantum Gray, a black grille with LED lighting, and a set of matte black 20-inch Kahn Mondial wheels. Inside, the Defender's previously spartan interior has been completely transformed with a full complement of modern amenities, including heated and ventilated front and rear seats, front and rear cameras, LED interior lighting, air conditioning, power windows, a full-length center console, an Alpine Halo touchscreen head unit, a custom stereo system with a subwoofer, and more. Upholstered in two-tone black-and-grey leather and Alcantara with contrasting grey hexagonal stitching, the luxurious interior also boasts four-passenger center-facing rear bench seats, Classic Instruments gauges, and a Kahn Design steering wheel. All this luxury did not come at the expense of off-road credibility, however, as the Defender is also equipped with height-adjustable air suspension, heavy-duty steering links, a thick aluminum skid plate, and General Grabber tires capable of any number of off-road excursions. This thoroughly modernized package is now offered with just 2,790 miles traveled since completion and is ready for enjoyment on or off-road.
