The Lancia Gran Turismo from the 1950s and early 1960s was very advanced in its time in construction, technology and appearance, and was without a doubt a car for true connoisseurs and enthusiasts. The creations of Gianni Lancia, in collaboration with Carrozzeria Zagato, resulted in an irresistible car: the Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato
The car was first presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1958 and was based on the chassis and mechanics of the Flaminia GT. The completely handmade aluminum body was a typical design of the Milanese coachbuilder: low, aerodynamic and functional. Under the bonnet was fitted a production 2.5 liter V6 engine of the Flaminia GT with 119 bhp. The not extremely high powered engine nevertheless made it possible that this relatively light and streamlined Zagato design reached a top speed of over 180 km/h.
In 1959 the new Flaminia Sport Zagato was built in limited series production on a chassis supplied by Lancia. The first 99 cars featured streamlined headlamp covers. In order to comply with the new Italian regulations, this became more conventional headlights on the later copies. The beautifully contoured body is characterized by the famous ‘double bubble’ roof, which not only provided more headroom but was also important for better aerodynamics.
In total, 599 Flaminia Sport Zagatos had been produced after production stopped in 1967. The later cars had variations in engines and carburettors, while from 1964 the last Super Sport was a heavily restyled version with a “coda tronca” rear.
Every version has its enthusiasts, and where one prefers the somewhat more aggressive look of the later more aerodynamic car, the other prefers the first versions with its great lines and very precise finishing touch.
Our Flaminia Zagato is the three carburettor version, 2.5 ltr V6 engine, built in 1963. A car that, originating from Italy, has driven in France from 1971 and later underwent a partial restoration in Italy again. The Lancia arrived in the Netherlands in 2006 and was bought by the current owner in 2014.
This owner is a true connoisseur, enthusiast and collector of only top Italian cars, but one for whom the best is not good enough. That is why the professionals of the restoration company Classic Skills from Lomm www.classicskills.nl were asked to unleash all their professional knowledge on the Lancia and to restore it to the highest concours standard. And that they succeeded, is proven by the victory with the highest attainable score at the 2018 Masterpiece Concours Schloss Dyck in Germany.
It is not easy to explain why this car is so extremely good. You have to look at it from a distance and then again from very close and above all admire it, just like a work of art. Every time you see details that make you wonder how it is possible to work at such a high level. The basis for those details was already laid at Zagato at the time, of course, but nowadays a car like this is very expensive and a restoration is only justified if it is carried out to the very highest level. And that is exactly where the difference has been made. The fitting of all chrome parts, including those of the extremely difficult to assemble roof moldings, for example, are phenomenally good and fit extremely well to the aluminum body. The fitting of all chrome parts was therefore checked and corrected every time during the sheet metal and chrome process. Until it finally met the high quality standards of the men of Classis Skills.
In this case, the Lancia also has the benefits of it’s beautiful color, called Grigio Escoli. A very warm silver color, which is the ultimate combination with the dark red leather interior. Very unique is the handmade Franco Conti steering wheel, also covered with red leather. The small back seat is an option, as are the typical Zagato sporting seats, which are not only a feast for the eyes due to their artistic appearance, but also ensure a perfect seating position due to their good lateral support, sufficient soft cushions and the quality leather specially imported from Italy. It may seem as if the leather is a bit loose fitted on the seats, but when someone takes a seat, the leather will also have the correct tension and shape, and will therefore hardly wear out. So this has clearly been thought about.
Now that we have talked about the seats, we of course also have to mention the driving impression of this iconic car. In the first place iconic because of its design, but also because of the great technology. The smooth V6 engine provides sufficient torque and the transaxle 4-speed gearbox can be operated very precisely. The steering is communicative, as it is intended in a sporty car, and on the other hand it feels very comfortable. To our opinon exactly the right balance.
With the double bubble roof above your head and a view of the curving bonnet and the beautiful instruments, the ride cannot begin soon enough in this great Lancia Flaminia Sport 3C Zagato.
