Introduced in 1957 and named after the ancient road leading from Rome to Ariminum, the Flaminia was an evolution of the Lancia’s well-established Aurelia concept, which also made use of a smooth-running V-6 engine, De Dion rear suspension, and rear-mounted four-speed transaxle. The Flaminia’s most notable departures from its predecessor were its modern double-wishbone front suspension and four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes.

Initially offered in two Pinin Farina-designed body styles, Lancia debuted two new variations of the Flaminia in 1958: The Touring-bodied GT and the Zagato-bodied Sport. Constructed from lightweight aluminum, the original Flaminia Sport model featured stylish covered headlamps, a prominent central hood scoop, and Zagato’s signature ‘double-bubble’ roofline. Lancia and Zagato produced approximately 99 ‘pre-series’ Flaminia Sports in 1959, and the model immediately attracted interest from a distinguished clientele, including Italian film star Marcello Mastroianni.

In 1960, Zagato redesigned the Flaminia Sport with more conventional ‘open headlights’ to comply with new Italian regulations. This updated model remained in production through 1964 and benefited from mechanical improvements such as a more sporting triple-carburetor (3C) arrangement and later, an increase in displacement from 2.5 to 2.8 liters. A final variation, named the Super Sport, appeared in 1964 and remained in production through 1967. This final model could be distinguished from preceding Flaminia Sports by its unusual headlamp treatment and modern Kamm tail design. In total, it is believed that just 599 Zagato-bodied Flaminias were built in all.

The Flaminia Sport presented here, chassis 824.13.3149, is one of just 174 examples produced featuring the original 2.5-liter engine (Tipo 823.10) paired with three Weber 35DCN carburetors – a desirable feature that increased output to 140 bhp.

While the Lancia’s earliest history is unrecorded, by 1989 it was owned by Diego Saleri of Coccaglio, Italy. During his ownership, the Flaminia Sport was finished in red with black upholstery and was registered with the Automotoclub Storico Italiano (ASI). Approximately 20 years ago, the Lancia was cosmetically restored and refinished in the elegant, non-metallic dark blue livery seen today, complemented by ivory wheels and brown leather upholstery. In 2015, the Lancia was sold by its then owner, Arcadia Group SRL of Bergamo, Italy, to a prominent Maryland-based collector via German dealer Movendi. The Lancia received minor cosmetic and mechanical attention during his ownership, before its more recent sale to the consignor.

Lancias are widely renowned for their sophisticated, over-engineered mechanical systems, and the Flaminia model maintained this reputation, with its jewel-like V-6 engine, rear-mounted transaxle, and superb road manners.
