Avec tout leur modernisme et leur raffinement, les Lancia des années 1930 se contentèrent de faire prospérer le riche héritage du premier chef d’œuvre maison : la Lambda. Avec son V4, sa structure monocoque et sa carrosserie aérodynamique en forme d’œuf, l’Aprilia lancée en 1937, fut une petite révolution. En 1939, Lancia élargit encore son domaine d’activité en présentant l'Ardea, qui ressemblait à une version réduite de l’Aprilia avec, comme elle, un dos rond, un nez court et des portières sans charnière ni montant central, chic. Plus courte de 35 cm que sa grande sœur, l’Ardea revendiquait tout de même son originalité propre. La mécanique était un peu plus simple, avec notamment un pont arrière rigide, mais ne manquait pas pour autant de raffinement. Le moteur est encore un V4 à culasse hémisphérique mais avec une cylindrée de 903 cm3 (65 x 68 mm). Il développe 28,8 ch à 4 600 tr/min. La commande des soupapes du moteur Ardea est aussi ingénieuse que celle de l’Aprilia, mais plus simple grâce à ses culbuteurs disposés de biais. Les bielles étaient en aluminium et sa boîte de vitesses identique à celle de sa grande sœur. La petite Ardea eut un lancement entravé par la guerre et ce n’est qu’après 1945 qu’elle commença sa véritable carrière commerciale. Vittorio Jano, entré chez Lancia juste avant-guerre, créa avec la troisième série une version améliorée, avec coffre accessible de l’extérieur, un système électrique en 12 Volts et des amortisseurs Houdaille. Elle est lancée au Salon de Turin en septembre 1948. Elle se distingue surtout par sa boîte de vitesses à cinq rapports, grande première sur une voiture de série, avec quinze années d’avance. La quatrième et dernière série, comme l'auto présentée ici, débute le 16 novembre 1949 et comporte des modifications mécaniques importantes comme une nouvelle culasse en aluminium, un taux de compression plus élevé, un nouveau carburateur et une puissance portée à 30 ch. Malgré l’interruption causée par la guerre, la carrière commerciale de l’Ardea peut passer pour un succès : elle fut construite à 22 000 exemplaires jusqu’au début de l'année 1953.

L’Ardea que nous vous présentons affiche une très élégante et rare couleur vert foncé. Elle nous apparait avec une très belle patine, fruit d’une restauration ancienne de qualité. Si l’intérieur fut également refait, les mites ont fait leur œuvre, et de nombreux trous sont à signaler. Il semble qu’une simple remise en route soit à prévoir avant de profiter de cette emblématique et performante Lancia.

With all their modernism and refinement, the Lancias of the 1930s were content to build on the rich heritage of the first in-house masterpiece: the Lambda. With its V4, monocoque structure and aerodynamic egg-shaped body, the Aprilia launched in 1937 was a small revolution. In 1939, Lancia further expanded its field of activity by presenting the Ardea, which looked like a smaller version of the Aprilia with, similar to its sister, a round back, short nose and doors without hinges or central pillars. Shorter by 35 cm, the Ardea still had its own style. The mechanics were a bit simpler, with a rigid rear axle, but not without refinement. The engine is still a V4 with a hemispherical cylinder head but with a displacement of 903cc (65 x 68 mm). It develops 28.8 hp at 4,600 rpm. The Ardea engine's valve train is as ingenious as the Aprilia's, but simpler thanks to its angled rocker arms. The connecting rods were made of aluminum and the gearbox was identical to that of its big sister. The launch of the little Ardea was hampered by the war and it was only after 1945 that it began its real commercial career. Vittorio Jano, who joined Lancia just before the war, created an improved version with the third series, with a trunk accessible from the outside, a 12-volt electrical system and Houdaille shock absorbers. It was launched at the Turin Motor Show in September 1948. It was distinguished by its five-speed gearbox, a first for a production car, fifteen years ahead of its time. The fourth and final series, like the car shown here, started on the 16th of November 1949 and included important mechanical modifications such as a new aluminum cylinder head, a higher compression ratio, a new carburetor and an increase in power to 30 hp. Despite the interruption caused by the war, the commercial career of the Ardea can be considered a success: 22,000 units were built until the beginning of 1953.

The Ardea that we present to you has a very elegant and rare dark green color. It appears to us with a very beautiful patina, fruit of an old restoration of quality. If the interior was also redone, moths have done their work, and many holes are to be reported. It seems that a simple restart is necessary before enjoying this emblematic and performing Lancia.
