Description

Jaguar XKSS

This exceptional Jaguar XKSS recreation was commissioned in 2020, following the owner’s initial attempt to acquire one of the nine official Jaguar XKSS Continuation cars produced by Jaguar. By that time, all nine examples had already been sold, with some reportedly changing hands at values close to twice their original purchase price. The decision was therefore made to create a unique and highly faithful interpretation of the legendary 1957 Jaguar XKSS.

The project was entrusted to Simon Dunford, a highly respected Jaguar specialist in the United Kingdom, renowned for his expertise in historic Jaguar models. The selected foundation was particularly significant: an original Jaguar D-Type chassis that had remained in the same ownership for over forty years and had previously been rebuilt as a D-Type.

The aim was not simply to build a visual replica, but to create a car that would remain as close as possible to the spirit, engineering and construction philosophy of the original XKSS. The build incorporates a riveted chassis, a period-correct 3.4-litre inline-six engine, Weber carburettors and mechanical solutions closely aligned with those used by Jaguar during the 1950s.

Originally expected to take two to three years, the project ultimately required nearly five years to complete. This was due to the impact of the Covid period, supply chain delays, and the high level of precision and authenticity required throughout the build. The car was finally completed and delivered in September 2024.

Finished in timeless Silver with a Black interior, a specification inspired by Ralph Lauren’s famous XKSS, the car reflects the understated elegance and competition-derived purity of one of Jaguar’s most iconic creations. Producing approximately 280 horsepower and still in its running-in period, it delivers a raw, mechanical and highly engaging driving experience, very much in keeping with the character of a 1950s competition-based Jaguar.

Although this car is not an official Jaguar Continuation model, it is an exceptionally faithful, carefully executed recreation of the XKSS. Built around a historic D-Type foundation and completed to a remarkable standard, it captures both the visual presence and the engineering philosophy of the original car.

The Jaguar XKSS itself remains one of the most celebrated and desirable automobiles ever produced. Introduced in 1957 as a road-going version of the legendary D-Type, it carried over much of the racing car’s advanced engineering and direct Le Mans pedigree. Jaguar originally planned to build 25 examples, but the Browns Lane factory fire destroyed nine unfinished cars, leaving only 16 original XKSS models completed.

This extraordinary rarity, combined with its racing heritage and timeless design, has made the XKSS one of the most valuable collector cars in the world. This recreation pays respectful tribute to that legend while offering a rare opportunity to acquire a handcrafted, historically inspired interpretation of one of Jaguar’s greatest icons.
