On 12 February 1957, Jaguar's main factory in Browns Lane was completely destroyed by fire. All the cars that were being assembled went up in smoke, including the XK 140 and - worse! - the D-Types and XK SSs being assembled. This sad event was the occasion for the venerable British firm to retire the XK 140 and hastily decide to develop a new model to succeed it. Unveiled in May 1957, the new XK 150, although a far cry from the slim and elegant 120, was to close the series in style, introducing the new 3.8 litre engine that would shortly afterwards lead to the arrival of the E-Type, another icon of the marque. The 150 is immediately recognisable by its wide grille (with sixteen bars, like the Mk 2) and its windscreen, now curved and in one piece. On the technical side, the engine is initially available in a 3.4 litre capacity, in normal 190 bhp or 210 bhp versions, but the real novelty is in the brakes, with Dunlop calipers and discs borrowed from the Jaguar racing cars. The model was first available as a cabriolet and coupé, before a roadster appeared in March 1958, introducing the 250bhp 3.4 litre S engine. In October 1959, the 3.8-litre engine, foreshadowing the E-Type, appeared under the bonnet of the 150, in either normal 220bhp or S 265bhp versions. In July 1961, Jaguar presented its new Grand Tourer, the E-Type, at the Geneva Motor Show. Production of the XK 150 ended in July of that year, after 9,402 were built.
This XK 150 was, like the vast majority of the production, exported from the factory to North America, where it spent its entire life. It was in Montreal that its current owner discovered it and bought it just under ten years ago. The car is in very nice original condition, with its cellulosic paintwork of incredible quality (some elements have nevertheless been retouched), its red leather interior with a patina and its period tool kit! The car runs very well, and for good reason, as during its lifetime the 3.4 litre engine and Borg-Warner automatic gearbox were replaced by a 3.8 litre engine with 3 SU H8 carburettors and a fully synchronised mechanical gearbox, each borrowed from a Mk 2. Our Belgian enthusiast, who had initially decided to leave the Jaguar in Canada, as his children live there, and he visits them once a year, finally takes it across the Atlantic to use it a little more regularly in rallies. It was at this time that he had the car's brakes and exhaust rebuilt (part of it is stainless steel), and fitted with adjustable shocks and beautiful Dunlop centre clamp rims, fitted with soft Avon tyres. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an XK 150 in a fast road configuration and particularly powerful, for less than half the value of a genuine 3.8 litre S... The original spoked wheels and a steering wheel in very good condition will be available for collection from the seller after the sale.
