Description
Launched as the replacement for the Jaguar E type, the Jaguar XJS was in production from September 1975 until 1996. Early examples in the 1970’s earned a bad reputation due to reliability issues but during the 21 years of production, ending under Ford ownership, the XJS finally earned the respect of luxury car enthusiasts
The Jaguar XJS offered sportiness, class, and style plus a level of luxury of cars much more expensive. The XJS was famous for its large 5.3 litre naturally aspirated V12 engine that produced 285 bhp and could reach a top speed of 230 km/h. It also came with either an automatic or manual transmission, with the later series models featuring the well-known ZF automatic transmissions or the 5-speed Getrag manuals.
The later Series 2 models received mechanical improvements, with an all new V12 engine which had power output increased to 295 bhp thanks to a newly designed “Fireball” combustion chamber which also improved overall fuel economy and performance. Along with the mechanical improvements, the series 2 XJS also received exterior and interior changes which included chrome bumper trim and newly designed wheels.
The series 3 XJS was introduced in May 1991 under Ford ownership and served up seventies style in a 90’s package while still retaining the retro sexiness of the 1970’s model. These cars are more desirable and feature galvanized steel body parts, a sleeker appearance with wraparound rear lights and outboard rear brakes which simplify maintenance.
