If you are looking for an affordable yet rare classic, this Jaguar might just be the ticket. With less than 10,000 made, the Jaguar XJC is the two-door version of the XJ built on a shortened platform. Frankly the XJC arrived at the wrong moment halfway through the 70’s. The car was introduced at the 1973 London Motor Show, bang in the middle of the oil crisis. Low fuel economy cars are not what people were after then. Added that Jaguar also had some teething problems with the build quality, sales only started to take off in 1975.

This green six-cylinder 4.2 litre coupé left the factory in 1977 and spent a long time in Switzerland. The owner must have consciously chosen for the 2-door variant being more expensive than the usual XJ. A funny detail is the fact the long doors are made up of 2 XJ front doors that have been welded together. You can detect the weld joins with the door removed. Since 2021 this chique coupé is to be seen driving around in the Netherlands and has been expertly maintained by specialists using specialised parts.

The XJC’s bodywork is very neat, especially compared to its contemporaries. Too often we find these models have not survived the ravages of time, partially because they were neglected and left exposed to the elements. Our example escaped this having a rust-free body and a neat coat of paint. We even believe that some of the finish is original. Nice and thin coverage that would show up any possible irregularity. The vinyl roof covering is also in a fine undamaged state. The application of a vinyl roof cover was not just cosmetic, it compensated for the torsion tendency of the coupé roof. There were two solution to this problem one is as aforementioned the other is to add a B-upright. Luckily Jaguar opted for the vinyl solution leaving us a pleasant continuous open space with the windows down.

When seated you can but admire the atmosphere of its brilliant, typically 70’s interior. The natural leather is in a beautiful condition. Well used without any damage, pure patina underlining its authenticity. Should the ambient temperature become to hot, close the electrically operated windows and let the original air-conditioning cool you down. The complete interior feels correct and is in fine shape and fully functional. That includes the whole array of Smith-meters in full working order.

Pure pleasure amply describes driving a XJC. The combination of a 4.2 litre straight-six and 3-speed automatic guarantees typical English refinement. Add the very comfortable suspension into the mix and this coupé is crying out to be taken on long journeys, possibly including one to its country of birth. Brakes, steering, suspension and all moving parts are all convincingly in great working order. The XJC’s underside is original and tidy. There are also a bunch of invoices detailing maintenance in recent times.

This is one of better and authentic XJC’s we have seen.
So if you are interested in a fairly rare Jaguar, steadily gaining in popularity, feel free to pop into Brummen for a viewing and you will not be disappointed.
