En octobre 1963 Jaguar présente la Type S disponible à la fois en version 3,4 l et 3,8 l. L'un des traits de génie de Jaguar et de ce modèle réside dans l’un des plus brillants moteurs de sa génération ; le célèbre XK, qui commencera justement sa vie en 3,4 l puis en 3,8 l et la finira en 4,2 l. Conçu en 1943 et 1944, né en 1948, le moteur 6-cylindres XK est resté en production jusqu’en 1986, date à laquelle il cède la place au groupe AJ6 tout alu 4-soupapes. C’est un beau record de longévité pour un moteur qui mènera cinq fois Jaguar à la victoire au Mans. Revenons à la Type S, le S indique qu’il s’agit en quelque sorte d'une super Mark II, la fameuse berline sportive lancée au Salon de Londres en octobre 1959. L’avant de la S-Type est très proche, en revanche toute la partie arrière semble provenir de la grande Mark X, en légère réduction. On note sur la partie avant quelques distinctions : disparition des petites veilleuses sur le sommet de l’aile, phares et antibrouillards surmontés d’une sorte de sourcil, visières en tôle, feux clignotants débordant sur la face latérale de l’aile, entourage de calandre plus épais et pare-chocs plus minces. L’aménagement intérieur est à peu de choses près celui d’une grande Mark X avec l’avantage de sièges avant plus étroits, offrant donc un meilleur maintien. Pour schématiser, la Type S est une Mark II à roues arrière indépendantes et avec un intérieur de Mark X. Le berceau détachable qui porte l’ensemble de la suspension arrière est exactement du même modèle que celui qui équipait déjà la Type E et la Mark X, si ce n’est la différence de voie. Mécaniquement, il n’y a pas de différence entre le XK des Mark II et celui des Type S : même bas moteur, même culasse et même carburateur.

À noter que 1965, millésime du modèle présenté, est l’année record pour la production du modèle avec 9 545 exemplaires construits. Au moment même où la Mk II connaît la situation inverse. Le dossier de la voiture comporte des factures d'une restauration de la carrosserie effectuée en 1994. À l'origine gris clair, la caisse fut repeinte en blanc crème. Notons la présence de plusieurs photos d'époque détaillant la restauration : le moteur fut déposé et la sellerie également refaite, en conservant son cuir noir d'origine. Elle présente depuis une belle patine, comme les boiseries de la planche de bord. Nous avons noté que le bloc moteur n’était pas d’origine, alors que la culasse oui. La voiture est équipée d’une boîte 4-vitesses avec overdrive. Nous avons aussi constaté que la cloche d’embrayage, fendue, avait été ressoudée.

In October 1963, Jaguar introduced the S-Type, available in both 3.4L and 3.8L versions. One of the traits of genius belonging to Jaguar and this model is one of the most brilliant engines of its generation; the famous XK, which started life as a 3.4L engine, then as a 3.8L engine and ended up as a 4.2L engine. Designed in 1943 and 1944, born in 1948, the 6-cylinder XK engine remained in production until 1986, when it gave way to the all-aluminum 4-valve AJ6 unit. This is a great record of longevity for an engine that would lead Jaguar to victory at Le Mans five times. Back to the S-Type. The S indicates that it is a sort of super Mark II, the famous sports sedan launched at the London Motor Show in October 1959. The front of the S-Type is very close, but the whole rear part seems to come from the big Mark X, slightly reduced. On the front part, there are a few differences: the small nightlights on the top of the fender have disappeared, the headlights and fog lights are topped by a kind of eyebrow, the visors are made of sheet metal, the turn signal lights extend over the side of the fender, the grille is thicker and the bumpers are thinner. The interior layout is more or less the same as that of a large Mark X, with the advantage of narrower front seats, thus offering better support. To put it simply, the Type S is a Mark II with independent rear wheels and a Mark X interior. The detachable cradle that carries the entire rear suspension is exactly the same as the one that already equipped the E-Type and the Mark X, except for the difference in track. Mechanically, there is no difference between the XK engine of the Mark II and the Type S: same engine, same cylinder head and same carburetor.

It is worth noting that 1965, the year of the presented model, is the record year for the production of the S-type with 9,545 units built. At the same time, the Mk II is in the opposite situation. The car's file includes invoices for a body restoration performed in 1994. Originally light grey, the body was repainted in cream white. Note the presence of several period photos detailing the restoration: the engine was removed and the upholstery was also redone, keeping its original black leather. The upholstery has gathered a nice patina, as has the woodwork of the dashboard. We noticed that the engine block was not original, while the cylinder head was. The car is equipped with a 4-speed transmission with overdrive. We also noticed that the clutch bellhousing, which was split, had been re-welded.
