The Jaguar Mk. V was launched at the 1948 London Motor Show at the same time as the company’s XK 120 model, with which it shared the stand. Whilst the Mk. V did not employ the new overhead camshaft engine that was introduced with the XK model, it did outsell the XK120 by a vast margin - some 5,000 Mk.V models being sold per year as compared to 2,000 units for the XK120 over the same period. The traditional Jaguar styling of the Mk. V, with upright chrome grille complete with the leaping Jaguar radiator cap mascot available as an option, stood up well against much more expensive options such as Bentley’s Mk.VI model. A 3 ½ litre car (similar to the car offered today) tested by ‘The Motor’ magazine in 1949 had a top speed of 90.7 mph, matched by useful acceleration.
