William Lyons was quick to grasp the opportunity to purchase John Black's Standard engine manufacturing plant, following Black's decision to adopt a one model policy in post-war years. This acquisition ensured continuing supply of engines for Jaguar and the plant was acquired at a highly advantageous price. Post-war Jaguar production was initially restricted to saloon cars, with the bigger 3½-litre model introduced in 1938, sharing the same 120-inch wheelbase used by the smaller 2½-litre sibling. Although outwardly indistinguishable from their pre-war SS counterparts, the post-war Jaguars did in fact have a different radiator shell, Lucas P100 lights with 2-inch clear centres and narrower chrome moldings.
