Introduced in 1971, the Series 3 marked a significant development of Jaguar’s celebrated E-Type. Its defining feature was the smooth 5.3-litre V12, which brought effortless performance and a refined character to the familiar shape. With flared wheelarches, a wider track and a revised front grille, the final-generation E-Type combined recognisable styling with an increased emphasis on comfort and long-distance touring.
The 2+2 Coupé made particularly good use of this broader brief. Its extended cabin and occasional rear seats offered additional practicality, whilst the enclosed body made it a comfortable proposition for longer journeys. Equipped with a manual gearbox, as here, the V12 provides an engaging combination of substantial torque and relaxed cruising ability.
This example is distinguished by its Heather exterior, an unconventional period colour that gives the car a particularly recognisable 1970s identity. The accompanying Jaguar Trace Certificate records manufacture on 20th May 1973 in Heather with manual transmission, followed by supply through Bolton Motor Company in Bolton, Lancashire. The exterior is complemented by Maroon leather upholstery and wire wheels, creating a distinctive alternative to the more familiar E-Type colour combinations.
Formerly part of the Anthony Hamilton Collection, which it joined in 2022, the Jaguar benefits from a history file documenting specialist attention over a considerable period. This includes invoices from CMC Ltd. and XK Engineering, with work recorded in April 2002 encompassing body repairs to the wings and sills.
During its time in the Collection, the E-Type underwent extensive refurbishment, including an engine rebuild. Supporting invoices record a broad range of parts and work, including a Rob Beere Racing oil pump, timing chain, rear crankshaft seal, crankshaft thrust bearing and big-end bearing set. The Stromberg carburettors were refurbished, the alternator serviced and the flywheel ring gear replaced.
Attention also extended beyond the engine, with replacement headlight assemblies, brake calipers and new wire wheels amongst the items recorded. The accompanying history file contains a fuller account of the refurbishment, allowing interested parties to review the scope of the work undertaken.
Since purchasing the Jaguar, our vendor has commissioned a further rear crankshaft oil seal upgrade, carried out by a Jaguar specialist using a modern lip-type oil seal. This upgrade replaces the original scroll-type seals to eliminate oil leaks. This subsequent work adds to the mechanical attention already documented.
Combining its documented factory colour and manual transmission with former Anthony Hamilton Collection ownership and substantial refurbishment, this Series 3 offers considerable appeal. Its distinctive presentation and V12 character make it an attractive proposition for an enthusiast seeking an E-Type with a strong emphasis on touring, and we encourage inspection of both the car and its accompanying history file.
