Turning the automotive world on its head upon its introduction in 1961, Jaguar’s E-Type was widely hailed as the most breathtaking sports car of the post-war era, an intoxicating blend of advanced engineering, competition-bred performance, and impossibly elegant design. So overwhelming was the response that Jaguar’s modest Coventry facility struggled to meet demand for the next four years, leaving little impetus for significant changes. As a result, collectors and marque aficionados today prize the nuanced details that distinguish the earliest examples, features such as chromed escutcheon external bonnet latches, flat floors sans later recessed footwells, and hand-welded bonnet louvers.
The example offered here proudly retains these rare and desirable hallmarks, placing it among the most coveted and purest expressions of the legendary E-Type.
As documented in its accompanying Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, this car, chassis 875157, was completed at the firm’s Browns Lane production facility 30 June 1961. Originally finished in Opalescent Dark Blue over red leather trim, the car was dispatched for American shores 26 July 1961 for distribution via Jaguar Cars of New York City.
While details of its early life have been lost to history, 875157 now wears all the hallmarks of a complete restoration. Stunningly finished in the always alluring livery of black over a red leather interior, 875157 is further enhanced by a black fabric soft top and coveted black factory hardtop. Crucially, inspection has confirmed the presence of the car’s matching numbers engine block and bodywork, according to Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust records. Accompanying the sale is a JDHT certificate, owner’s manual, jack, and knock-off hammer.
A true automotive icon, this early production Jaguar E-Type Roadster embodies the perfect union of performance, beauty, and innovation, offering a driving experience as unforgettable today as it was revolutionary upon its debut. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mo25/.
