The successor to the legendary Jaguar C-Type, the D-Type is a racing car produced by the British manufacturer in order to continue its involvement in competition, particularly in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. While the first car had already made a name for itself by winning the Le Mans event in 1951 and 1953, the second took up the baton with great success. It took first place on the podium in 1955, 1956 and 1957. This success was due to a number of technical features that made it a real killer: disc brakes on all four wheels (still rare for racing cars of that era), a 3.4 litre engine developing 241 bhp, a monocoque that saved the weight of a chassis (as on the C Type) and real work on aerodynamics. Malcolm Sayer was responsible for its design, as was the E-Type.
The Jaguar D-Type didn't just win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It also won the 12 Hours of Reims twice, the 12 Hours of Sebring once and the 6 Hours of Pomona and Torrey Pines. Available in two different body styles ('short nose' and 'long nose'), the Type D initially sported a streamlined head restraint and then, to improve stability at high speed, was fitted with an imposing centreboard. At the end of its career, the engineers swapped the 3.4 litre for the 3.8 litre.
This model was produced in the early 1980s by REALM, a company that had bought out R.A.M in the mid-1970s. The car therefore has a French registration document which clearly identifies REALM as the manufacturer.
The car is in good overall condition, with long-nose bodywork, a sharkfin and a windscreen covering the passenger seat. This beautiful car is powered by a Jaguar 3.8L engine with three Weber carburettors and a 5-speed getrag gearbox.
Restored between 2014 and 2016 by its previous British owner, who took the opportunity to install an electronic igniter to facilitate cold starts.
