Description

The Jaguar 420 was a four-door saloon with a sporty character, launched by Jaguar in 1966 to fill the gap between the Jaguar S-Type and the large Mark X saloon. Technically, the car was largely based on the S-Type, which had been unveiled three years earlier; the S-Type was itself a derivative of the Mark II, but for space reasons could not be fitted with the Mark X’s 4.2-litre six-cylinder engine. The 420 was given a longer front end so that this engine could now be accommodated. Visually, the only thing the 420 still had in common with the Mark II was the passenger compartment. It adopted the rear end of the S-Type, which was already modelled on that of the Mark X/420 G. However, whilst the front end of the S-Type had still corresponded to that of the Mark II, on the 420 it was now also adapted to match the Mark X/420 G, so that the 420 looked like ‘a Mark X with the middle section of a Mark II’ – or, put simply, was just the smaller version of the 420 G. For the 420, the 4’234 cc inline six-cylinder engine was modified in detail. Whilst the engine in the Jaguar E-Type and the Mark X was fitted with a triple SU carburettor, the 420 was equipped with only a twin carburettor and produced therefore183 hp. This Jaguar 420, fitted with a 4-speed gearbox and overdrive, was delivered new to Switzerland and handed over to its first owner by Garage Hauri in Biel on 2 March 1967. The original service booklet shows that all service up to February 1973, or 97’800 km, were carried out by the dealership that originally delivered the car. After that, the saloon’s history is unclear – it presumably had several owners and was also garaged for a considerable period. In March 2022, the Jaguar, with an estimated 158’800 km on the clock, was finally acquired by the current owner and added to his collection. Since then, he has covered around 4’000 km in the 420 and now wishes to part with his saloon due to a new addition to the collection and a lack of space. The Jaguar is in a very original overall condition and still has its original matching-numbers engine. The car drives and changes gear well; the bodywork is in good condition with signs of wear and tears typical of its age. The original leather interior is in decent condition. The most recent veteran MOT was carried out in March 2022.
