Introduced in 1955, the Ford Thunderbird was designed to serve as stylish, luxurious personal transportation; performance, while always adequate, was of secondary importance—at first. That would change as the model evolved, with 1957 seeing the introduction of the desirable “E-Code” performance model.

Finished in Coral Sand over a White interior with a White convertible top, this beautiful Thunderbird is one of only 1,449 E-Code examples produced for 1957. Its 312-cubic-inch V-8 produced an impressive 270 horsepower thanks in part to dual four-barrel Holley carburetors. Here, it is mated to a two-speed automatic transmission. An under-hood dress-up kit, which includes a distinctive chromed air cleaner cover and chromed oil breather cap, brings a suitable degree of flash to the car’s uprated engine.

Styling, too, was revised for 1957, with this Thunderbird displaying the new model year’s updated, sleeker look; in addition to a larger grille, the car grew more defined tailfins, while the spare tire was tucked into the enlarged rear trunk. Cabin amenities present on this example include power steering and windows and a power seat and, for entertainment, a Town & Country radio set into the engine-turned dashboard. Kelsey-Hayes-style chrome wire wheels wrapped in wide whitewall tires, meanwhile, complete the period-correct look.

Under previous ownership, this car was treated to a total cosmetic and mechanical overhaul by the award-winning restorer Mark Barker. Completed in November 2017, this job included bodywork and paint, upholstery and convertible top, new fuel and brake lines, exhaust, and wiring harness, and an engine and transmission rebuild.

Following the completion of work, this wonderful E-Code Thunderbird has been carefully maintained by the consignor and presents in excellent condition; it is ideal for exhibition or cruising in style. Its sale is accompanied by a spare tire and jack, as well as photographic documentation of its restoration.
