We have a rare 1951 Ford Prefect. The car originated in New-Zealand. The Ford Prefect was a British design and the first Ford not to be developed in Detroit. The Prefect was built or assembled at various corners of the globe, like our car that was assembled in New-Zealand. The Prefect has a 1,172 cc 4-cylinder side valve engine producing about 30 Ps. The engine is coupled to a 3-speed gearbox. The previous owner imported the car from New Zealand in 1996 and has looked after the car for the last 24 years. Over the years a perfect paper trail has been kept and now amounts to two filing boxes full. The import process has been recorded, the re-spray photographed, even the original owner’s manual and original papers from its time in New-Zealand are present! The most remarkable fact is the original bodywork. The Ford Prefect was just a normal car at its introduction. Normal car’s tend not be cherished and so over time become scarce. For a long time as there were enough cars still around it was not worth its while to carry out a restoration. Nobody other than a few fanatic enthusiasts seemed to be interested. Fortunately the previous owner was just such a person, who preserved the car really well. The panelwork is nice and thin and correctly aligned. The years are starting to tell so the bodywork is no longer perfect. For its age the chassis is in good condition. The interior trim is very neat. The vinyl is neat as is the instrument cluster and other controls. The engine runs well and the gearbox is precise.
