Introduced to rave reviews in 1964, the Ford Mustang invented the “ponycar” genre. As the sixties advanced, the advent of the muscle car changed the competitive landscape, as most of these legendary beasts were created by shoehorning a big displacement overhead valve V8 engine into a lighter weight midsize – or ponycar – body shell.
