Few automakers resisted change as energetically as Henry Ford. Ole' Henry reckoned that the Model T that had served so well when introduced in 1908 still had life in it as the 1920s beckoned. The T had many merits. It was cheap, reliable and could be fixed by virtually any farmer, blacksmith or self-taught mechanic. It also put millions of Americans on four wheels and helped spread automobility to Canada, Great Britain, Australia and most other corners of the earth.
When Ford finally decided that the sturdy 'Tin Lizzie' had run its course, the decade was half over. Unlike most other automakers, there was little transition to the new model. Production of the Model T ceased in May 1927 and only a few thousand of the new Model A were produced by year's end.
