Description

Five decades after Ford’s GT40 dominated endurance racing during the late 1960s and nearly one decade after the final second-generation Ford GT left Ford’s Wixom factory, the stunning new Ford GT debuted at the January 2015 North American International Auto Show. Development of road models was conducted by Ford engineers in concert with the Chip Ganassi Racing/Multimatic Motorsports racing cars that won their class and finished 3rd, 4th, and 9th at Le Mans in 2016. Clearly a more extreme, cutting-edge, competition-minded vehicle than its predecessor, the GT is in many ways a road-going FIA LMGTE-class racing car. High-tech materials, ingenious engineering, and advanced technologies can be found throughout. Manufacturing of the road models was carried out by Multimatic Motorsports at a purpose-built, low-volume production facility in Markham, Ontario, Canada, where the first Ford GT road car was completed on December 16, 2016.

Based on a carbon fiber monocoque, the GT’s surprisingly compact bodywork delivers minimal aerodynamic drag and stands just 43.7" tall. Suspension is via competition-style pushrod-actuated dampers and sections of an FIA-legal roll cage are neatly integrated into the GT’s roof structure. Exuding a tear-drop shape when viewed from above, the GT’s main bodywork tapers sharply to the rear and delivers prodigious downforce at speed. Flying buttresses direct cooler air into the engine and pontoon-style rear fenders are in the vein of track-only Le Mans prototypes.

Powering the GT is a 3.5-liter, twin-turbo and intercooled DOHC EcoBoost V-6 engine. Developing 647 hp, the engine delivers an incredible 550 lbs./ft. of torque. Harnessed by a Getrag seven-speed, dual-clutch transaxle, the GT accelerates from 0–60 mph in under three seconds, with a top speed of 216 mph. Hydraulic steering, huge cross-drilled brake rotors, Brembo calipers, and extremely lightweight carbon fiber wheels round out the GT’s stunning mechanicals. When switched into race mode for track duty, the GT delivers sharper response to throttle inputs, less-sensitive traction- and stability-control programming, lower ride height, and stiffer suspension adjustment plus noticeably firmer shifts.

Equipped with far too many features to fully list, this 2018 Ford GT is finished in Frozen White over the upgraded Dark Energy interior – one of four optional treatments, priced at $30,000 alone. In all, over $76,000 in extra-cost options were specified, including six-point harness anchors, the exterior carbon fiber package, gloss 20" exposed carbon fiber wheels, titanium exhaust as well as silver brake calipers and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, plus blue outdoor and white indoor covers. With fewer than 100 miles recorded when catalogued, this highly optioned 2018 Ford GT comes with its original window sticker and dominates today’s supercar field with incomparable heritage, performance, and presence.
