The Model: For 1966, the Fairlane series received an entirely new body that took many of its styling cues from the fullsize Galaxie family of fine Fords such as the wide front grille, vertically stacked headlights and basic body shape. In addition to the all new styling, it was the first time that a convertible model could be ordered on the midsize Fairlane with a little over 18,000 units being snapped up in three different trim levels. It was also the first time that a big-block V8 could be ordered in the regular production Fairlanes and this really boosted the models visibility in the world of muscle cars. While the Fairlane 500 was well appointed, stepping up to the 500XL meant vinyl covered bucket seats, a center console with transmission shifter mounted, plus stylish badges that let people know you drove a car of distinction.

The Car: In Ford’s quest for Total Performance the 1966 Fairlanes were a big part of the picture. Starting what appears to have been a fairly straight and rust free body, this convertible was fully restored with all of the proper 500XL amenities added. While this car was delivered with a 2barrel version of the 390 cid V8, it was upgraded during restoration to a 428 cubic incher, something that wasn’t available when new. To properly deliver horsepower and torque to the rear end, a four-speed manual transmission was installed. Finished in Corinthian White and complimented by a white soft top and red vinyl seat surfaces, it paints a picture of a car that you can have fun with. A set of original chrome Styled Steel wheels mounted with dual redline tire completes this portrait of speed and elegance. Workmanship, fit, finish and overall quality all rank at the top.
