Description

In 1980, an RS2000 Custom was an extremely aspirational purchase, with the distinctive polyurethane droop snootfront end and air dam, distinguishing it from any other EscortThe RS2000 substituted the diva-ish Cosworth unit for a sturdier 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder, SOHC, Pintoengine, which was mounted longitudinally, endowingthe car with a 0-60 mph time of just 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 108mphAn original shell, fully matching numbers car, restored to an amazing Concours condition, winning1st place in the expert category at RSOC Lakes tour 2017Accompanied by lots of historyUnlike the Mk1 Escort which was designed by Ford of Great Britain, the Mk2 was a much more sophisticated design that was jointly developed with Ford of Germany. Based on a standard Mk2 two-door saloon shell, the RS2000 used the familiar 2-litre, inline four-cylinder, SOHC, 'Pinto' engine mounted longitudinally in the bay driving the rear wheels. A single twin-venturi 32/36 DGAV Weber carburettor was fitted with the option of a Group 1 dual Weber 40 DCNF or IDF set up. The front suspension used independent MacPherson struts with an anti-roll bar and at the rear, traditional leaf springs with telescopic dampers were utilised. Front-mounted discs and rear drums were used and four-spoke alloy wheels came as standard. Its biggest distinguishing feature was a droop snoot polyurethane nose housing four headlamps which gave it a rather aggressive look. The new car was capable of 110mph with 0-60mph taking 8.9 seconds, not too shabby in 1976, and which combined with the cars distinctive looks and that shiny RS badge, set Fords showroom doors swinging. In September 1978, Ford introduced the RS2000 Custom which came fitted with Fishnet Recaro seats, full door cards, clock and pod, centre console, 6Jx13" alloys, boot carpet, remote drivers door mirror and a black panel around the rear lights. In 1980, an RS2000 Custom was an extremely aspirational purchase, with the distinctive polyurethane droop snoot front end and air dam, distinguishing it from any other Escort. The car presented here is a 1980 Ford Escort RS2000 Custom in extraordinary restored condition. The quality of the car has been recognised with many RSOC show accolades and trophies, with it winning 1st place in the expert category at RSOC Lakes tour 2017 no mean feat! Our vendor knows his classic Fords and has owned some of the best examples in the UK. Importantly, this car retains its original shell and is also matching-numbers, forming the basis for an exacting restoration. The car drives and performs to a similarly high standard and is in, arguably, the best colour for a droop-snoop of Venetian Red. Cars of this quality rarely come to the market, with our vendor now having a change in circumstances. If this was your aspirational new car in 1980, this is the closest you can get to owning one today. You will not be disappointed.
