Description

Built in July 1971 and first registered on 1st August 1971, this Ford Escort Mexico is one of just 17 competition-prepared examples produced by Ford's Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) department. Race-prepared at Boreham, the fleet was supplied to Ford France for the 1971 Tour de France Automobile, where this car, finished in Maize Yellow, was driven by Jose Albertini with Rene Cipriani of Nice-Matin.

Following the Tour, the fleet returned to the UK to contest the famous Jack Brabham Trophy for Formula 1 Team Managers at Brands Hatch on 24th October 1971. This very car was driven by Lotus founder Colin Chapman, competing against an extraordinary field that also included Jack Brabham, John Surtees, Frank Williams, Max Mosley and Ken Tyrrell.

Chapman enjoyed a thrilling race-long duel with Brabham, setting the fastest lap before ultimately finishing third after a missed gear on the final lap. In a fitting twist, Brabham declined to accept his own trophy, resulting in Chapman being presented with the winner's garland.

After Brands Hatch, the Escort Mexico fleet was dispersed, many going on to compete in the 1972 Mexico Challenge and in rallying. Consequently, very few survive today, with this car believed to be one of only four remaining. A comprehensive history file accompanies the car, including original entry lists, race reports and supporting documentation from Alain Beauchef, confirming its exceptional provenance.

Presented in outstanding condition and offered from private ownership, this is far more than an early Escort Mexico. With documented factory competition history, participation in the 1971 Tour de France Automobile and a proven connection to Colin Chapman, it represents one of the most historically significant Escort Mexicos to come to market and a fitting addition to any world-class collection. Consigned by Charlie McCreery
