The Tipo 500A, affectionately known as the ‘Topolino‘ (Little Mouse) was introduced in 1936, and revolutionised transport for the masses all over Europe, being cheap and reliable and fun to drive; over 112,000 were made before production ceased in 1948, only minor modifications being made over this period. They were frequently used as a basis for competition cars, and the bodywork entrusted to many of the carrozzerie in business at the time. The mechanics were more often than not provided or upgraded by Siata, the pre-war equivalent to Abarth. They achieved notable successes and took part in all the important races of the period, including the mythical Mille Miglia.
