The FIAT 1400 was produced between 1950 and 1958, the first car of FIAT to adopt the carrier body instead of the traditional chassis structure.
But the 1400 is also the first Italian car designed after the end of the 2nd World War, thanks to the good loans granted to Italian companies under the nascent Marshall Plan.
Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1950, for the 50th anniversary of Fiat, the new car was equipped with a powertrain capable 44 hp at 4,400 rpm, pushing the sedan to a maximum speed of about 120 kph. In 1953 the FIAT 1400 was also the first Italian car to adopt a diesel engine, with a 1901 cm³ engine with 40 HP.
From the same chassis there was also a convertible version, built by the “Fiat Carrozzerie Speciali”, which became famous as taxi in Capri and, in the version with a 1900 cm³ engine, as a car of the Italian Police.
In 1956 the FIAT 1400 A was replaced by the 1400 B, with an upgraded engine of 58 hp and with nicer finishes, closer to those of the 1900, with which shared the large grille with central fog headlight. Thanks to the wonderful two-tone painting, so appreciated in the United States and the collaboration with the American printing company Budd, it was a great success in USA market as well.
