Au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale, Fiat est dans une situation économique compliquée. Grâce à l’aide du plan Marshall, les usines détruites pendant la guerre sont reconstruites et le constructeur turinois retrouve une cadence de production digne des années trente. De nouveaux modèles sont alors introduits sur le marché, parmi eux la Fiat 1100 qui sera déclinée en plusieurs versions dont un rare Coupé signé Pinin Farina, plus élégant et plus typé Grand Tourisme avec un habitacle plus cossu et surtout une ligne équilibrée rappelant à si méprendre à la Lancia Aurelia B20 GT… Présenté en 1949, le Coupé Fiat conserve l’élégant parebrise en coupe-vent mais se caractérise par une robe plus galbée et élancée, rappelant les plus belles carrosseries italiennes telles que Maserati, Siata, Stanguelini ou encore Cisitalia. Si extérieurement la S et la ES ne se différencient pas, l’habitacle est plus spartiate dans sa version S alors que la ES dispose d’un tableau de bord plus complet, d’une banquette avant plutôt que de deux sièges séparés et même d’une petite banquette à l’arrière. Que ce soit les boutons poussoirs, les accessoires de portes, les loquets de déflecteurs, ou les poignets extérieurs, jamais une Fiat n’a poussé le raffinement aussi loin dans le détail. Certains prix glanés lors de concours d’élégance viendront d’ailleurs récompenser cette beauté intemporelle, dont “officiellement” 400 exemplaires verront le jour jusqu’en 1951.

Aujourd’hui, on compterait moins d’une dizaine d’exemplaires de Fiat 1100 ES Coupé Pinin Farina dans le Monde. Celui que nous présentons aujourd’hui à la vente a une histoire des plus singulières. #500435 est sortie des chaines de production du Lingotto, à Turin, le 5 juin 1950. Elle sera envoyée à la carrozeria Pinin Farina le 5 septembre avant de revenir au Lingotto pour ses essais de mise en service. Elle est alors envoyée chez le concessionnaire Fiat de Bozano, au Nord-Est de l’Italie mais elle n’y trouvera certainement pas acquéreur car elle revient à Turin début 1951 pour être finalement expédiée au Maroc le 5 mars au garage Afric Auto de Casablanca. C’est alors qu’elle obtient sa première immatriculation n’ayant jamais eu de plaques italiennes auparavant. Son tout premier propriétaire en revanche est bien d’origine italienne lui, Noé Ceccheti. l Est-ce lui qui court le VIe Rallye du Maroc cette même année¬? Ou bien l’a-t-il déjà revendue à Albert Manarino, qu’on retrouve au départ des 12 ¬Heures de Casablanca en 1952¬?
Sur les indications de son ami et mentor Yves Joseph, un collectionneur éclairé, son actuel propriétaire, un français établi au Maroc, la découvre au milieu des années 1980. La Fiat est protégée de l’humidité et des intempéries dans le sous-sol d’un immeuble de Casablanca mais elle a été le terrain de jeu des enfants du quartier ! Malgré cela, l’auto est complète et « matching numbers », à l’exception des vitrages et de ses enjoliveurs spécifiques. Pas effrayé par le chantier à venir, sa restauration débute au milieu des années 1990 et s’étalera sur 15 ans. Il faut dire, son propriétaire n’en est pas à son coup d’essai mais le temps lui manque. De ses mains, l’ensemble de la carrosserie, le châssis et la mécanique seront restaurés. Sa restauration terminée, elle sera exposée lors de la 5ème édition du Gentleman Drivers Awards 2017 à Marrakech. A cette occasion, son propriétaire remportera un prix d’honneur des mains de Paolo Pininfarina !
Il y a quelques jours, la voiture a été révisée à l’Atelier 46 près de Paris avec la réfection intégrale du réservoir, du circuit d’essence et le réglage de la carburation.

Rarissime, Il resterait moins de 10 exemplaires de ce modèle éligible aux Mille Miglia et à bien d’autres événements majeurs. Belle, rare, matching et à l’historique limpide, il ne fait aucun doute que cette voiture est une jolie découverte…

Immediately after the Second World War, Fiat was in a difficult situation financially. Thanks to the help provided by the Marshall Plan, the factories which had been destroyed during the war were rebuilt and the Turin-based manufacturer returned to a level of production comparable to the 1930s. New models were then introduced, including the Fiat 1100, which was produced in several different versions, among them a rare Coupé designed by Pinin Farina. This was more elegant and more GT-like, with a more luxurious interior and, above all, a well-balanced design which could be mistaken for that of the Lancia Aurelia B20 GT … First shown in 1949, the Fiat Coupé retained the stylish wind-cheating front screen, but was characterized by its slender and more shapely bodywork, which brought to mind the most beautiful Italian coachwork produced by the likes of Maserati, Siata, Stanguellini or Cisitalia. Externally, there was no difference between the S and ES models, but the interior of the S was more basic, while the ES had a better stocked dashboard, a front bench seat in place of two separate seats and even a small bench seat in the rear. Whether you looked at the pushbutton switches, the door trim, quarterlight catches or exterior door handles, Fiat had never demonstrated such refinement down to the smallest detail. A number of prizes gleaned at concours d’élégance moreover rewarded this timeless beauty, of which “officially” 400 examples were produced until 1951.

Today, it is thought that fewer than ten examples of the Fiat 1100 ES Coupé Pinin Farina remain in the world. The model we are presenting at auction today has a quite remarkable history. Chassis no. 500435 left the production line at Lingotto in Turin on 5 June 1950. It was sent to the Carrozzeria Pinin Farina on 5 September before returning to Lingotto for pre-delivery testing. It was then dispatched to the Fiat dealer in Bolzano in north-east Italy, but it evidently did not find a buyer there, as it returned to Turin at the start of 1951, before finally being sent to Morocco on 5 March, to the Afric Auto garage in Casablanca. Only then was it registered for the first time, never having had Italian plates beforehand. Its first owner, however, was very much an Italian, one Noé Cecchetti. Did he drive it in the 6th Morocco Rally that same year? Or had he already sold it to Albert Manarino, who competed in the Casablanca 12 Hours race in 1952?
Based on the information supplied by his friend and mentor Yves Joseph, a discerning collector, the car’s current owner, a Frenchman living in Morocco, discovered it in the mid-1980s. The Fiat had been protected from bad weather and damp in the underground car park of a building in Casablanca, but the local children had used it as their playground! Despite this, the car is complete and “matching numbers”, except for the windows and the wheel trims specific to the model. Undaunted by the work that lay ahead, its owner began to restore it in the mid-1990s, the work extending over 15 years. It should be said that its owner was anything but a beginner, but he lacked the time needed. In his hands, the entire body, chassis and engine were restored. Once the restoration was finished, the car was displayed at the 5th edition of the Gentleman Drivers Awards in Marrakesh in 2017. On this occasion, it received an award from the hands of Paolo Pininfarina himself! An exceedingly rare model, eligible for the Mille Miglia and many other top events, fewer than ten are thought to survive. Beautiful, unusual, “matching numbers” and with a clear history, there can be no doubt that this car is a wonderful discovery …
