Portofino. The name immediately transports you the jewel of the Italian Riviera – the spiritual home of the Italian playboy and the world’s glamorous elite during its 1950s heyday. Nowadays it defines elegance and opulence in equal measure – an appropriate name for an effortlessly stylish Ferrari that converts from an authentic ‘Berlinetta’ coupé to a drop-top capable of delivering a unique Ferrari soundtrack and superb driving pleasure even in day-to-day situations. And one painted in a stunning Celeste metallic, well that is simply heavenly.

Let’s get one thing straight, the Portofino may be nowhere near the fastest Ferrari you can buy, but that’s not what it’s all about. This is a Grand Tourer. While you still won’t come anywhere near using all of its performance on the road without your driving license starting to sweat profusely, it’s the way the Portofino makes speed and finds traction that impresses. Unlike the Continental GT and 911 Cabrio, there’s no four-wheel drive system, yet the Portofino requires very little help from its traction control when deploying a big slug of horsepower to the rear tyres even when exiting a corner briskly and as a result, feel surprisingly unintimidating to drive fast, even with the electronic aids slackened in Sport mode.

The Portofino uses Ferrari’ twin-turbo V-8 making 591 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the reduced weight of the all-new chassis, Ferrari says it will hit 62 mph in a mere 3.5 seconds and has a top speed greater than 199 mph. For a car with seating for four, that’s seriously quick.

But because the Portofino is a grand tourer, Ferrari says it also made sure the cabin is comfortable and refined. You get a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a new steering wheel, 18-way electrically adjustable seats, and new backrests that help the rear seats feel more spacious. Plus, because this fastback is also a hardtop convertible, Ferrari upgraded the air conditioning to improve passenger comfort when the top is down on one of those hot Italian summer days. You can now also raise or lower the roof on the move at speeds up to 30 mph.

This example is fitted with the optional Magneride Dual-Mode Suspension and is incredibly comfortable in real world conditions, even over rough B roads and we’d certainly have no objection to hot-footing it down to the South of France in it given the opportunity!
