Description

Ferrari's 201 mph F40 is the definitive supercar and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road Ferrari built to date. With the F40, Pininfarina produced an era-defining creation, one that even today is instantly recognisable by old and young enthusiasts alike. F40's were closely derived from the experimental GTO Evoluzione and the road-going 288 GTO (that the F40 replaced). The design features a tubular steel chassis with bonded composite inserts, most notably around the sills and floor pan, The 2,936 cc motor produces approximately 500 bhp at 7,000 rpm with the help of two water-cooled IHI turbochargers running 1.1 bar of boost. At 1,202 kg, the F40 had, and still has, a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. Shatteringly fast by any comparison (especially for 1988), the F40 can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and hit 201 mph flat out making it the first production car to surpass this mystical boundary.

Thirty-five years after the fabled F40 first made its appearance, we are fortunate to be able to offer this remarkable example, one of just 78 cars supplied new to the UK, this F40 is offered for sale for the first having remained with its first and only owner since delivery in 1991.

A prominent member of the Ferrari Owners’ Club of Great Britain, this single owner example was purchased in 1991 via Maranello Sales of Egham. Just a handful of F40s were collected from Maranello in person, as this car was in May 1991.

Rarely have we seen a history file as comprehensive as this, which still contains the owner’s first letter of interest (dated 1987) and tracks his correspondence with Ferrari up until he personally collected the car in May 1991 from Maranello and drove to Monaco on Italian Export Plates where he then registered the car on the 5th July 1991.  8 years later, the car was then registered in the UK under the registration 'H206 PPU' on 7th June 1999 before later changing to 'F4 ORK' on 10th November 2008.

In 1991, the car was entered into the first of several UK Concours events. Continuing to enjoy the car sparingly; it was displayed at further UK Concours events until 2002, by which time the car picked up no fewer than 5 “Best in Class” awards.

During his residence in Monaco the car was serviced by Ferrari although this is not documented. Throughout its life the car has since been fastidiously maintained by the UK’s best renowned specialists, the cars service is now full of stamps and the history file records over 30 services - virtually unheard of for an F40.

For the last decade the car has been maintained at no expense spared by ourselves, most recently benefitting from a service in April of this year, Cambelts in 2020 and replacement of fuel tanks in 2018. True to its past life on the concours scene, the car’s cosmetic condition, especially paintwork is in exceptional condition with a large amount of ‘weave’ visible on the front and rear clam as well as the roof and the doors  - a clear indication  that this car has not been repainted.

Today the mileage of this ‘Cat, Adjust’ example stands at just 43,913 miles from new, fully documented and supported by its comprehensive history file - which also includes service book, handbook, and spare key. The original tool kit and Tyre inflator kit are also still with the car, meaning this example is ready for the second owner to use and enjoy as Enzo intended.
