Ferrari’s front-mounted 12-cylinder GTs, no matter the era, exude the undying glamour of Maranello’s mid-century halcyon days. It is no coincidence, therefore, that the 2005-launched Superamerica revived a famous moniker first deployed 50 years earlier with the Ferrari 410 Superamerica. The earlier car was so exclusive it is reputed to have cost as much as two Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs, with former owners including Gianni Agnelli and even Enzo Ferrari himself.
Production of the 575M Maranello-based Superamerica was performed in-house, yet exclusivity remained, with just 559 made. Despite a ticket price 25 per cent higher than that of the 575M, all Superamericas were allegedly pre-sold by the time the production car was unveiled. The majority were specified with the automated “F1” transmission, with only 43 discerning drivers choosing the optional six-speed manual. The Superamerica offered here is one of those driver-focussed machines.
Designed and patented by Pininfarina master stylist Leonardo Fioravanti—the man responsible for the 288 GTO—the Superamerica’s party piece was undoubtedly its rearward-rotating “Revocromico” roof. Aping his Alfa Romeo Vola concept, Fioravanti’s vision for the Superamerica incorporated a roof mechanism that flipped its glass lid 180 degrees onto the rear deck in less than 10 seconds. As if that wasn’t innovative enough, the drop-top was supported by a bespoke carbon-fibre frame—made in conjunction with Saint-Gobain—and formed from a single pane of electrochromic glass, able to change through five driver-selected tints.
The Superamerica’s Tipo F133G engine was a tuned version of the 575M Maranello’s 5.75-litre V-12, making an additional 25 horsepower thanks to optimised gas flow of the intakes and cylinder heads. A revised, back-pressure reducing exhaust system was also developed, together resulting in the world’s fastest convertible upon launch, with a top speed of 320 km/h.
Delivered new to Austria, this Superamerica is offered with its Ferrari manuals and a toolkit. In February 2023 the car benefitted from a Gohm Böblingen Ferrari dealer service, with an invoice on file totalling €6,783. This service included the replacement of the Ferrari’s timing belt. At the time of cataloguing, the odometer read 15,157 kilometres. This remarkably well-presented example of the highly innovative and sought-after Superamerica commands collector attention.
