The 488 Spider uses the same 3.9 litre twin-turbo V8 as the GTB, producing 670 ps at 8,000 rpm and 760 Nm, sent through a seven-speed DCT to the rear wheels. The retractable hard top consists of two panels that disappear behind the seats in fourteen seconds, and can do so at speeds up to 45 km/h. The whole assembly occupies just 100 litres of space, against 150 to 200 litres for a conventional hard top, leaving the car's lines intact. To compensate for the loss of the roof, Ferrari reinforced the chassis front and rear and reworked the aluminium alloys used. The result is torsional rigidity that Ferrari claims matches the coupé, at the cost of 50 kg.

Fun fact: the glass rear window between the buttresses moves entirely independently of the roof, across three positions. With the roof down it acts as a wind deflector, with the roof up you can lower it to hear the V8 without getting wet.

Het opklapbare hardtop bestaat uit twee panelen die in veertien seconden achter de stoelen verdwijnen, en dat kan tot 45 km/u. Het geheel neemt slechts 100 liter ruimte in, tegenover 150 tot 200 liter voor een conventioneel hardtop, waardoor de lijnen van de auto intact blijven. Om het verlies van het dak op te vangen versterkte Ferrari het chassis voor en achter en herzag het de gebruikte aluminiumlegeringen. Het resultaat is een torsiestijfheid die volgens Ferrari gelijk is aan die van de coupé, tegen 50 kg extra gewicht.

Leuk detail: het glazen achterruitje tussen de steunberen beweegt volledig onafhankelijk van het dak, in drie standen. Met het dak open werkt het als windscherm, met het dak dicht kan je het laten zakken om de V8 te horen zonder nat te worden.

Le toit rigide escamotable se compose de deux panneaux qui disparaissent derrière les sièges en quatorze secondes, et ce jusqu'à 45 km/h. L'ensemble n'occupe que 100 litres, contre 150 à 200 litres pour un toit rigide conventionnel, ce qui préserve les lignes de la voiture. Pour compenser la suppression du toit, Ferrari a renforcé le châssis à l'avant et à l'arrière et revu les alliages d'aluminium employés. Le résultat est une rigidité en torsion que Ferrari annonce identique à celle du coupé, au prix de 50 kg supplémentaires.

Anecdote: la lunette arrière en verre entre les arcs-boutants se règle indépendamment du toit, sur trois positions. Toit ouvert, elle fait office de déflecteur; toit fermé, on peut l'abaisser pour entendre le V8 sans se mouiller.
