Ferrari kept its head when all about them were losing theirs during the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship season. McLaren was still reeling from the fallout of the infamous ‘Spygate’ scandal and bitter 2007 rivalry between former team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso; Renault would instruct Nelson Piquet Jr to deliberately crash out of the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. Amid the turmoil, defending Drivers’ champion Kimi Räikkönen and Felipe Massa delivered Ferrari its record-extending 16th Constructors’ crown.

Almost two decades later, still no other team comes close to matching that feat. The next-most decorated outfit, McLaren, boasts 10 teams’ titles by comparison. Even Ferrari itself is yet to add to the tally. Recognising the scale of the achievement at the time, Ferrari saw fit to christen the convertible counterpart to its harder-edged 430 Scuderia model the “16M”.

Like the coupé, it housed a mid-mounted naturally aspirated 4.3-litre V-8 engine that delivered 503 brake horsepower via the F1-SuperFast2 six-speed transmission. Despite featuring significant strengthening and stiffening of the open body, Ferrari engineers nonetheless managed to slash 80 kilograms from the kerb weight of the F430 Spider thanks to a crash diet that included lightened front and rear bumpers, forged alloy wheels exclusive to the model, and re-worked front suspension and steering. As a sign of just how committed engineers were to weight saving, even the wheel bolts were reproduced in titanium.

From the stated production run of 499 examples, the car offered here was supplied new to the United Kingdom configured in right-hand-drive form. Compared to many red and black Scuderia Spider 16Ms, it stands out courtesy of its bright Bianco Avus bodywork with racing stripe and red soft-top roof over a special-order red leather interior. Further details include the carbon fibre interior trim and white tachometer plus wing-mounted exterior Ferrari shields.

Recorded in the accompanying service book, the Scuderia Spider 16M was delivered on 10 October 2009 via Graypaul Nottingham to its first owner in Lincolnshire. A further stamp in the service book shows a return to the official Ferrari franchise for maintenance in October 2011. Under the care of a new owner in Wales and as part of its ongoing maintenance by marque dealers and specialists, the car was entrusted to Dick Lovett Swindon for its annual servicing between January 2012 and July 2016.

Purchased by the previous owner in March 2018, the Scuderia Spider 16M was cared for by H R Owen in Cheltenham and DK Engineering. Notable work carried out, as supported by the numerous invoices that are available to view on file, includes DK Engineering replacing the front lower ball joints and track rod ends in May 2018.

The Ferrari was acquired by the vendor in June 2024. Sparingly driven in their possession, it displayed 13,150 miles on the odometer at the time of cataloguing. The Scuderia Spider 16M is offered with its owner’s guides in their leather folio further to the tool and tyre inflator kits.

With reports that as few as 48 examples of the Scuderia Spider 16M were configured in right-hand drive, this UK-supplied car—offered in a lesser-spotted colour scheme and boasting Ferrari main dealer and specialist maintenance history—is sure to appeal to Prancing Horse aficionados.
