Description

"The first ‘Boxer’ was the 365 GT4 BB shown at the 1971 Turin Motor Show. Designed to rival the Lamborghini Miura and the newly developed Lamborghini Countach, it was finally released for sale in 1973 at the Paris Motor Show. 387 were built, of which 88 were right hand drive (58 for the UK market), making it the rarest of all Berlinetta Boxers. The Pininfarina-designed body followed the P6 show car with popup headlights. Though it shared its numerical designation with the Daytona, the Boxer was radically different. It was a mid-engined car like the Dino and the now flat-12 engine was mounted longitudinally rather than transversely. It has 380 hp which is also slightly higher than the Daytona. The engine shared its internal dimensions with the V12 from the Daytona, but was spread out to 180° as on Ferrari's 1970 Formula One car and was mounted above a five-speed manual transmission.
Manufactured by Ferrari in December 1974, chassis 18259 is one of the 58 right hand drive, UK delivered, cars manufactured; it was delivered to UK importer, Maranello Concessionaires, in January 1975 and first registered in the UK at the time. According to the copies of the build sheets and correspondence from Tony Willis of Maranello Concessionaires Archive, chassis 18259 is finished in its original colour scheme of Azzuro blue with a Nero hide interior and the engine number matches that of the factory records; the body number ‘253’ located on the rear engine cover, front bonnet and door handles also match that of the factory records.
Further correspondences in the file include a copy of the original order from HR Owen to Maranello Concessionaires Ltd. on 14th August 1974, a confirmation of the order from Ferrari in Modena on 9th September 1974 to Maranello Concessionaires and a copy of the original delivery letter on 2nd January 1975 detailing the purchase price of £9,765 and Ferrari records confirming the car was eventually destined for Singapore after its arrival in the UK.
The car returned to the UK in the mid 1980s and purchased by British Hotelier and collector, Sonu Shivdasani. Chassis 18259 was in good company with a Ferrari 246GTS Dino, a 1973 Porsche 911RS, a Bentley S3 Radford and a further 365GT4 BB also in the collection.
Correspondence in the file includes a recent email from Mr Shivdasani confirming his purchase of the car from either the Sultan of Brunei of the King of Malaysia and a letter from Maranello Concessionaires in 1993 to Mr Shivdasani confirming the lack of early history was due to the very low mileage the car had covered since 1975 along with period photographs showing the car fitted with a rare Ansa sports exhaust which still adorns the car today. The car remained in his ownership until the mid 1990s, but during his tenure in early 1994, work was carried out by Prowess Racing totalling over £2,253 for engine work. According to Prowess, the symptoms of the car not running correctly were due to a period of storage for some time. In 1995, the car was sold to Paul Simon with a recorded mileage of 1,550 miles and is now showing 4,092 miles. Bills from Ferrari specialist John Etheridge from October 2001, contained within the file, are totalling £5,957 and further work carried out by Official Ferrari dealer Francorchamps Motors of Brussels in 2006 are totalling €8,800. Chassis 18259 was laid up for a number of years; it has subsequently undergone a full re-spray in its original colour scheme of Azzuro blue as well as a re-trim and engine out overhaul including  replacing exhaust valves and rebuilding the cylinder heads by Ferrari specialist Neal Lucas in Camberley, Surrey. One of the rarest Ferraris produced; this right hand drive example is striking in its original Azzuro livery; this is a highly collectible Ferrari and one that appears to be very attractively estimated."
