The Ferrari 212 Inter

Ferrari 212 Inters started life in 1952. The 212 was an evolution of the 166 and 195’s, a car for the road that could also win international races. Built from the same tough tubular type of chassis, mechanical superiority as its racing brethren of the early 1950’s, this 212 was launched in 1952 as the prototipo of a more luxurious version. Five years after the first Ferrari was created, Pinin Farina built its first coupe body for a Ferrari which is this 212 on offer.

Chassis 0229EL was constructed on the 28th of July 1952, and became the very first Pinin Farina bodied Ferrari coupe, and one of just 15 Pinin Farina 212 Inters produced. Called a prototipo, meaning prototype, it is believed it was delivered new to Enzo Ferrari himself. It left the factory in the colour scheme Maserati blue with a light blue and dark blue piping leather interior, and was delivered via Luigi Chinetti of New York to its first owner; Max Hess of Pennsylvania. The car re-appeared in the US in the early 1970s fitted with a Chevrolet engine, which happened to a number of Ferrari's at this time. During a restoration in 2001 the original engine was located and reunited with the car. It passed through a number of hands before being acquired in 2010 by its current owner who bought it solely with the intent of restoring it to show standards. A comprehensive nut and bolt restoration started in 2010 in New Zealand by the word famous and respected Autorestorations in Christchurch, finishing 8 years later.
