Description
Exceptional restoration base
Rare and sought-after
One of the earliest examples produced
The Ferrari Dino GT4 is a coupé car mass produced by Ferrari between 1974 and 1980 and presented at the 1973 Paris Motor Show. Conceived as a complementary element of the Dino brand, which already featured the two-seater Dino 246 GT, the Dino GT4 represents a milestone in Ferrari's history due to the considerable number of innovations introduced. In fact, it was the first production car from Maranello to adopt the mid-rear-engined V8 layout, the first to have the timing gears controlled by rubber toothed belts, and the first and only production Ferrari to bear Bertone's signature. Designer Marcello Gandini created a coupé with taut, balanced lines, very different from the classic canons of the Ferrari-Pininfarina duo and similar to those of the rival Lamborghini Urraco, designed by Gandini himself.
Born as the Dino 308 GT4, a 2000 cc engine was also installed on the same chassis. This model was built with the Italian market in mind: at that time, the tax lever was particularly onerous for cars with engines larger than two litres. The reduction in displacement was achieved, compared to the three-litre engine, by reducing the bore, while the stroke remained unchanged. Although it could not reach the performance of its bigger sister, with the small but refined V8 the car was able to exceed 220 km/h. The engine of the Dino 208 GT4 is the smallest V8 ever mass-produced and displays a remarkable power-to-cylinder ratio for the time
The stunning example we present here has been preserved over the years maintaining its total originality, never restored before, one of the first examples of this model to be produced, probably one of the first 100 of only 840 examples made, it retains its original interior in excellent condition and original original mechanicals. The bodywork has noticeable rusted areas at the base of the doors before the front wheels, and other small blooms in various areas of the bodywork. It has not been used for a few years although the engine is regularly started and run, to date it needs a general overhaul and a complete service, and may need additional mechanical work. An exceptional basis for a conservative restoration of a now rare, highly sought-after model.
